“Just Right”

The restaurant was excellent, the upstairs bar was great for viewing the harbor and the midnight sun. Proximity to all the local attractions and bus lines was excellent. The location is better than the Radisson's.

“Tromso's first choice”

I stayed in Rica Ishavshotel twice in 1Q 2011 and was happy on both occasions. My rooms had great view towards the Arctic Cathedral & mountain ranges. Buffet breakfast was excellent with good choice of fruits, in fact a bit overwhelming. The only drawback is the construction work in the waterfront which can be a bit disturbing if one wishes to sleep in.

Area recommendations
Nice restuarants include the Emma (good reindeer steak & salmon) & Ann (nice cosy place for coffee and light meal).

“A Stay in Tromso iduring Total Polar Night”

I stayed for a week at the Rica Ishavshotel in early January, 2011--during total polar night. My single room was comfortable and warm, even though the weather outside was cold and snowy. The heated bathroom floor was a nice touch. I didn't pay the extra daily fee for a sea view, but I did have a nice quay-side view from my room window. Breakfast came with the room and I was offered an array of tasty choices. Although the hotel doesn't offer room service, it does have a contract with a local pizza purveyor and they deliver the pizza directly to one's room, with the cost charged to the hotel room bill. Overall, it's a nice water-front hotel near the tourist information center. This was my second stay there.

“Hotel fine, but not cheap!”

For its price we were disappointed. It was twice the price of the Radisson Blu next door, and was not worth the difference. The breakfasts, as others have commented, were excellent, but the staff service lacked supervision. Some items were left off the tables when setting them, especially first sitting. We ate out in the evenings at local restaurants which was enjoyable but pricey, like all things in Norway.

Area recommendations
In Tromso The Polar museum and also Polaria are well worth visiting. Other excursions are extremely expensive for what you get. We did treat ourselves to the Fast Catamaran Ferry from Tromso to Harstadt and back, which gave a wonderful view of the scenery. (We took our own rolls from breakfast to save money.) Paying the extra for the first classs lounge paid for itself in free tea and coffee and DIY sandwiches, as well as giving a much better view of the scenery.
Dining
Emma's restaurant has a nice ambience and we had two good meals there. The Skarven (fish restaurant also good. Good tip is to have coffee downstairs where you can get a refill for free!

“Best place to stay in Tromso”

Would definitely go back to this hotel. Standard room size very adequate, with sofa and great view over the harbour. Great choice of breakfast buffet. Bar is really nice, if busy at the weekend, but we couldn't hear the noise at all from our room. Good little second bar as well. Other hotels in Tromso didn't look as nice as this! Only thing I would change would be bathrobes and conditioner in the bathroom.

Area recommendations
Tromso is a small place so need to stay right in centre (not over bridge as it would be a bit of a trek every day).
When to go
Really difficult to work out the best time of winter for best chance to see the northern lights. We stayed 3 nights and it was too cloudy or they just didn't appear. V disappointing! Although there are enough museums etc to keep you occupied for a few days.
Getting there
The airport bus stops at the Rica hotel, but taxis are always around and reasonable value. Taxi from airport to hotel cost us £15.

“Location, location, location”

Hotel is good. Great buffet breakfast meaning you can skip lunch! Rooms are functional and clean (although they did forget to clean once). Views from the bar and restaurant are fantastic. Best of all is that the airport bus stop and all trips pick up/drop off from the front door. Definitely recommended.

Traveller's tip
Tourist Information is just around the corner from the hotel - go there first and book all your trips. Stock up at breakfast to avoid expensive lunches as food in restaurants is costly

“Great location, wonderful breakfasts”

Hotel has great view from a wonderfully convenient locations. Breakfasts are great and all-you-can-eat. If I can understand any Norwegian, I think they just got awarded "Norway's Best Breakfast". Eat your fill at breakfast and you can easily skip lunch, saving you a fortune. Disappointed that there are no tea/coffee-making facilities in the rooms of a 4-star hotel, though? Bus to airport stops right outside door. You can walk from here to: Arctic Cathedral, cable-car, south-end of Tromso island.

Traveller's tip
There's a fishmongers about 200m from the hotel. Grab yourself a half-kilo of the best prawns you'll ever have! Beware the beer prices - 130 NoK for a large beer and a small one.

“Just as we hoped!”

The hotel was in a lovely location and when we arrived we asked for a bay room which they managed to accommodate, the view is beautiful! Breakfast is amazing and as Norway is so expensive you could really fill up! The staff aren't overly warm but if you asked them anything they were always really helpful.

Traveller's tip
Hire a car and drive to Sommeroy - possibly the most beautiful place in the world. Dog sledding was also fantastic - expensive but worth it.
