The magnificent Hall of the Four Heavenly Kings in Linyan Temple brings Buddhist pilgrims seeking spiritual solace to the city from across China. King Qian’s Memorial is a perfect spot for the more secular pursuit of simply watching the world go by. For a lovely view over the city you should climb to the top of the Six Harmonies Pagoda. In the evening head to the towers of the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon on Xiaoying Island. The holes in the towers release shafts of candlelight that create a wonderful and haunting ambience.

Things to Do in Hangzhou

Explore the legendary West Lake by walking or cycling around its perimeter. There are picturesque gardens that line the lake and in them you can often catch performances such as opera singing or acrobatics. All the lake’s causeways are fringed with willow, plum and peach trees but the prettiest spot to stop for a rest is The Broken Bridge. For history lovers the museum in the Hangzhou Old City Wall Exhibition Hall displays artefacts and stunning paintings. Meanwhile, the China National Tea Museum, set within fields of tea bushes, is a fascinating place to taste tea and learn about the art of its cultivation. A short drive away, the mountain ranges surrounding Hangzhou have routes that are ideal for hiking in.
