When visiting Ringkøbing, expect a good fresh wind to accompany you during your hiking or water sports activities. A horse-drawn carriage is on hand to take tourists at a leisurely pace around the charming old streets with their welcoming shops and cafés.
The name ‘Ringkøbing’ means ‘market town at Rindum’, a small village established in the Iron Age. Thanks to its sheltered fjord location and access to the sea, the town’s importance as a trading hub grew as it expanded. It is also the base for many of the activities on offer, especially in the summer, with aquatic activities on Ringkøbing Fjord and the North Sea. If travelling with children, a swim in the fjord is highly recommended – the water is calmer there than in the North Sea.
A weekend break or a full holiday in or around Ringkøbing means lots of activities, including pony trekking in the woods or a round of golf on the local course. Cyclists will love the 125 km route around the fjord. The relatively shallow water in the enclosed lagoon of the fjord is also ideal for windsurfing.
The ancient town centre is well preserved and still looks pretty much as it did in the 1800s, with the characteristic architecture of red tiled roofs, dark bricks and white cornices. The town square features the handsome timber-framed Old Town Hall and old Mayor's residence. Getting to Ringkøbing is easiest by road or rail. The railway runs between Struer and Skjern and has excellent links with the rest of the country.
You can also admire Ringkøbing Church on the square. Dating from the early 1300s, its distinctive spire acts as the town’s landmark. Ringkøbing Museum tells the story of the history of West Jutland through a range of frequently changed exhibits. Walk from the square to the Port of Ringkøbing, and enjoy the view over the harbour area, dotted with chic yachts and fishing boats returning with the catch of the day.
If relaxation close to the water with plenty of family activities is what you're looking for, Ringkøbing is perfect. Find an atmospheric restaurant and watch the sun slowly sink below the horizon whilst enjoying an excellent meal.
