A special place overlooking the Atlantic
Ottley's Plantation Inn left us feeling we'd seen an authentic restored plantation, unlike so many other places that call themselves plantations on St. Kitts & Nevis. We had stayed at four different properties during our tour of St. Kitts & Nevis and viewed several others, so we had plenty to compare. We stayed in a deluxe room on the top floor of the great house and could not have asked for anything more. Beautiful views down over the lawn to the Atlantic ocean in the distance in one direction, and overlooking the garden at the edge of the rainforest in the other direction. Lovely restaurant and pool, attentive hosts and staff. Probably the only downside was its remote location (transportation adds up if you want to get around to other restaurants, beach and sightseeing), but that was also an important part of its charm and what made it so special. Highly recommended.

Paradise
From start to finish this was an exquisite vacation. The grounds are gorgeous - lush foliage and green lawns - along with unique sounds from the wildlife. The owners and staff far exceeded our expectations - they were friendly and beyond helpful. Anything we needed (including tours, reviews, and suggestions) was immediately provided. My husband remarked that "this must be what heaven is like." We are well-traveled and rarely visit the same place twice (there is so much to see in the world) but we are planning a return visit to Ottley's.

Charming old inn
Very attractive setting high above the Atlantic. Grounds and buildings quite lovely. Staff could not have been nicer or more helpful. Dining is quite good. Would have given a higher rating except that some renovation is needed, particularly our bathroom which needs a complete redesign and redo.

Thank you for your feedback. We do appreciate that you have taken the time to send us a review. We're happy that you found the setting, staff and dining to be of a high standard. As for the bathroom, we have taken your comments to heart and will be addressing the issue soon. Warmest regards to a lovely couple.

Nice and relaxing
Room was spacious and nice. Very restful - which is what we needed. Staff was great. They were very helpful to arrange activities that were outstanding. Restaurant was a great setting with a nice view of the Atlantic. Food was very good, and they even allowed us to order off the menu when we wanted something a little lighter for dinner. Service in the restaurant was great, and we enjoyed getting to know the staff there. The rain forest was a nice - about a 30 minute walk around the loop trail. There wasn't a TV in the room, but we found we didn't need one anyway. It allowed for more reading and resting. This was the perfect place for us, and we enjoyed our 5 days there.

Luxurious base for rambling (US:hiking)
Everything which other reviewers have said about the quality of the site, the rooms, the food and the staff is quite correct, so I won't repeat it. For many guests, Ottley's is just a place to relax, and you can certainly do that. However, it is also a superb base from which to explore the eastern side of St Kitts. A farm track on the north side of the property leads quickly up into the foothills of Mt Verchilds, where it meets the 18th century route from Philips across the island to Old Road Town. We went up to the col, but there the overgrown vegetation made further progress impossible. Nevertheless, there are all sorts of tracks which allow an excellent day's walking - and then there's a gourmet dinner to come back to at Ottley's. Host Marty gave us a great deal of useful advice about other walks, such as along the coastline in both direction from Keys, and across the island from Cayon to Basseterre (a very easy route, which can be made more interesting by looping around Monkey Hill). He has put in steps down to Grange Bay, which is a pleasant half-day ramble from the hotel, and lent us his OS map, which is out of print but gives far more detail than the tourist map. I must also mention the swimming pool, which is built in to an old plantation building. This is permanently open, so allows a pre-breakfast as well as an afternoon or evening swim, which not many places do. It is spring-fed, so the water is clear, unchlorinated and quite cold.

Honeymoon
This was the first week of our honeymoon - the welcome and staff were generally outstanding. We would happily go back. The room was spacious with jacuzzi bath and plunge pool - excellent. Breakfast was really good with lovely views. We didn't realise before we booked that they had a free shuttle at 11am to go in to town/some of the beaches (you can also get it back at about 4pm) - this was really worthwhile and a good addition. Restaurant has lovely food - lobster was brilliant. Owners are very attentive and clearly care about people who stay there and the Plantation in general.

Ottley Plantation,St. Kitts
Ottley Plantation is about a 20 min tough ride to town. If you intend to spend most of your time on the property or are planning to rent a car this property is ideal. The old plantation is original in most respects and the many gardens are spectacular. Rooms are large and fit the period. Meals are excellent but pricey. Taxi ride to town will run about $25 american dollars one way. St. Kitts is a beautiful country, very hilly with spectacular views. Many of the beaches are pretty but small and a 30 min from the plantation. The country is only 68 sq miles with a population of around 32,000. The residents were very friendly. I was on the island for a week and experienced many positive interactions with the residents.

Beautifully restored plantation house
So relaxing. Huge room in the main house, very attractively decorated. Beautiful pool and restaurant built around the walls from the old plantation works. The view from the main restaurant was stunning, one of the best of the 15 or so places we've stayed in the Caribbean. Hands-on run by the owners, always a good thing.

Wonderful hotel. Some minor maintenance concerns.
Lovely hotel. For the most part the staff was extremely friendly and courteous. The food was very good, although a bit expensive. Our chief concern is that management does not appear to be attending to a number of items that require maintenance (broken shower door, broken tub faucet, light in plunge pool does not work, bathroom door needs repair, etc.). We heard other guests commenting on "deferred maintenance" as well. In the long run this could become a real problem for this hotel. We would definitely return to Ottley, but with the hope that maintenance has improved.

couples hotel ~ you better rent a car!!
The hotel is beautiful and staff was excellent BUT not a place to visit with children. The food was delicious at the restaurant but it is extremely expensive. With one bottle of wine for three and just the main meal it was $240.00. That is crazy expensive and not worth it a bit. The pool was not heated enough to make it a pleasant swim and with our 17 year old with us we felt awkward and out of place. Thank goodness we rented a car and it took us a half hour to forty five minutes to get to beaches and activity. I would recommend a day visit to see the plantation as it is beautiful but would never stay there again.

Plantation Charm
Ottley's is very beautiful and the staff is very friendly. The property manager knows every guest and is always at dinner and breakfast to find out how your day was and if you need any help getting around. The food is phenomenal! It is far away from everything which is the one down side. They have trails going through the rainforest so there is lots of exploring to do. The cottages feel like you are walking in to the 1700's but the beds are very comfortable and the rooms are very clean!! If you don't like being surrounded by crowds of people like you are at resorts this is definitely the place to be!! We loved staying here and next time we come back we will be staying here again!

Plantation was beautiful.
The setting was like paradise. The views from the room of the ocean, the cottages and the mountains were picture perfect. I had a massage in the adorable little spa that overlooked the rainforest. the spa music system was broken but we didn;t need it - the chirping of the birds was magical. I took a business call on the side porch of my room and watched the monkeys playing under the trees. The staff was incredibly helpful from the shuttle drivers, their designated cab driver, the owners, managers, etc. We felt like we were truly pampered.

Perfect quiet getaway
Ottleys is a wonderful place to stay tucked away in the countryside. The service is top notch and the hotel grounds are pristine. Dinner at the Royal Palm restaurant on the property was consistently the best on the island. Ottleys is a little off the beaten path and travelers will need a car to get to the beaches. They do provide a complimentary shuttle but having your own transportation will make your duty on St Kitts more enjoyable. Overall, Ottleys was a great place to stay doth real old world charm.

Wonderful, Friendly Getaway
The staff was wonderful, and tireless is helping to track down our luggage, which didn't arrive from Chicago when we did. Ottley's is on high ground, away from the city, and better suited for people who like us who want to read, swim in a pool, and walk around spacious, meticulously-tended grounds than for folks who want to be right on the beach or in town to enjoy the night life and all the delicious, locally brewed beers in one lively place after another. We greatly enjoyed Ottley's, but realize that it is not for everyone.

Surprising stay
My wife and I were pleasantly suprised at how great of stay we had at Ottleys. The hotel and grounds were charming set against a rain forest backdrop with Mango trees and tropical flowers. The service was excellent and the owners added a nice personal touch during day to day interactions. By far the most relaxing vacation ever. Even with a volcano hike on our last day.

Ottley's is paradise on Earth
This was our first stay at Ottley's. We have eaten dinner there on two previous trips to St. Kitts, but never stayed. As it was our 30th wedding anniversary we thought we'd stay there instead of the other place we normally stay. It was an amazing experience. The staff are all so nice, knowledgeable, and friendly. The landscaping is outstanding and really a testament to the attention to detail for all the facilities at Ottley's. We ate most of our meals there as well and every one was an amazing experience. The dinners were especially good. We stayed in the Great House on the second floor. The views of the ocean are outstanding and on a clear day (with low humidity) you can see St. Marteen and St. Barts. We never used the air conditioning in the room. There was always a breeze and it was nice to be serenaded to sleep every night by crickets and tree frogs.

Good, but not deluxe!
This is a small boutique hotel in a lovely garden setting with fantastic views. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Our deluxe bedroom was large and clean with a comfortable king-size bed, but some of the bathroom fittings and room facilities were less than deluxe. The breakfast menu was quite limited but the food was well prepared and plentiful. The dinners, however, were variable in quality. The starters and desserts were usually very good but the mains were often disappointing, containing a range of contrasting flavours that spoilt the underlying quality of the ingredients.

Wonderful Guest Inn with Breathtaking View.
This is not another cookie-cutter hotel. Ottley's Plantation is a secluded 5 star Inn with friendly staff and great service. The food is excellent (a bit pricey but the whole island is expensive). The shuttle is a great way to get into town or the beach for a day. Taxis can be hired if you want to explore the island. The room was cozy with a small refrigerator/wet bar. The bathroom had a big shower. The view was breathtaking.

Staff went out of their way to make us comfortable
Ottley's plantation was the most beautiful resort on the island. Accommodations were clean and roomy. The staff went out of their way to make us comfortable. The food at the hotel restaurant was a bit pricey, but incredibly delicious. The swimming pool was a bit cloudy and overchlorinated, but very relaxing. The rainforest on the property was magnificent. Be sure to enjoy the mangos that drop every few minutes just outside your room. There are rosy and floral flavored "apples" near the rainforest that are out out of this world. Keep an eye out for cute little pigs, monkeys and mongoose. Ottley's is a paradise.

Nice, quiet location in St. Kitts
Ottley's Plantation was a nice little place to stay. It was very quiet and had some great views of the mountain and the ocean. Overall, I would recommend this inn for anyone visiting St. Kitts who wants peace and quiet. There are a few potential negatives. We stayed in a cottage with a plunge pool. There are no TVs in the rooms, so bring a portable DVD player if you want to watch anything. There is a TV/cable in the great house if you want to walk to it. There was no internet/WiFi in my room. You will have to walk to the great house or main pool to get WiFi. The mini-fridge did not appear to cool food very well. I started putting bags of ice in it to help cool my food. There is no microwave in the room. The air conditioner does work, but it cuts off after about 30 minutes and does not automatically restart if it gets warm. If you choose to eat at the inn, plan on spending a fortune. Everything is expensive, whether you get it a la carte, or if you buy the meal plan. There are also some service charges/taxes not included in the price of the food/meal plan. Basically, it adds up to a 22% tax on the food (10% service charge, 10% VAT, and 2% for something else). This is why the fridge was an issue to me, since we would go to the grocery store to buy our food. This inn is located in the mountains, so if being on the beach is important to you, then you should go somewhere else. It does not take long to drive anywhere on the island. Rent a car!

A fine stay in a gracious Inn
Gracious is the word. If you would like to know what it was like to live on a sugar plantation on St. Kitts, this is a close as you'll get. We never touched the AC unit in the room, much preferring to let the steady sea breeze move through the slatted windows. The sounds of the rain forest were our lullaby and our morning greeting. The service was excellent. The staff is well trained and very attentive. We arranged a number of side trips while we were there and Davio and Janet did a terrific job of making it all happen. Our meals were taken in one of the original stone buildings, now converted into a restaurant. At breakfast we look out a mile or so to the broad sweep of the Atlantic Ocean as small finches snitch brown sugar crumbs from our table. The meals were amazing. Since the chef only serves about 30 or 40 meals he is very creative. Each dinner starts with a small treat as a gift from the chef. The appetizer and main courses are each a culinary adventure and almost nothing is repeated. We have stayed in many places in many countries. From now on this will the standard of service to beat.

Service, meals. and lodging all very high quality
My wife and I stayed at Ottley's Plantation during the last week of June 2011. The service, food quality, and room comfort were all very high quality and exceeded our expectations. We particularly enjoyed the botanical tour of the premises by Marty, one of the owners, and, his family and inn staff extended a very warm reception. Ottley's also provides a daily free shuttle to the capitol, Basseterre, and to the main beaches along the southern peninsula. If your looking for a quiet comfortable inn, reflecting St. Kitts' sugar plantation past, Ottleys's is a great choice.

Must stay destination in St. Kitts
Beautiful boutique hotel in St. Kitts. Away from cruise ship crowds, also distance from the beach. However, the hotel offers a free shuttle to and from the beach/ downtown area. The service is outstanding! I stayed for a week in February 2010, and I felt like I was staying with family. Best part about the location is that you are on the edge of the rain forest, so I was lulled to sleep each night by the tree frogs, and at dusk I had great fun watching and photographing the green vervet monkeys. If you are looking for a peaceful destination away from the crowds, where you will be treated like a VIP, this is definitely the place to stay!

I chose this Inn based solely on travel guide book information and Internet searching. I was quite curious whether it could live up to it's glowing reputation. Not only did it meet my expectations - it exceeded them by far! I think the main reason I was so pleased with my stay was because of the gracious, attentive but not smothering, and classy way the staff and owners treated me (and the other guests as well). The grounds are serene, immaculate and invite meandering. The entire place is a conduit for quiet relaxation. The food at the on-site restaurant was superb!

Alles is heel koloniaal ingericht. Bediening is fantastisch. Je wordt persoonlijk aangesproken. Zoals gezegd een stukje eiland voor jezelf. Door de fantastische omgeving en een heel persoonlijke benadering van de staf krijg je wel een heel speciaal gevoel bij dit hotel/deze Inn.
