    “Not interested in foreigners.....”

The hotel is in a good location, the concierge were very helpful. The lobby coffee/lounge area is very nice with great service and drink quality was excellent, even though a bit pricey. As far as the breakfast/buffet goes, it was disgusting! The cooks very constantly wiping their noses with their hands and in the next motion were handling your food! I mentioned this to the food managers and they seemed to have the attitude that this was okay and why was I complaining! Besides that the quality of the buffet food was substandard. This is the main reason I would not go back. I have stayed at this hotel twice before hoping things would improve but unfortunately they are not interested. I travel 200 days a year. The hotel caters to primarily Chinese government employees and they are not interested in anybody else

    Area recommendations
The Pudong Lu Jao Zui area is central and this side of the river is normally very nice but for the foreseeable future the walk will be under construction I would recommend Hongqiao area around the Sheraton for now. Don't miss walking around the old town...lots of little surprises to be found.

    “Great choice”

I spent two weeks in China on vacation and decided to splurge on a great hotel my last two nights. The Oriental Riverside is convenient to the subway and easily accessible by taxi. The room was extraordinarily clean, many subtle amenities, quiet, and comfortable. My only complaint is that food service was not accessible. The most expensive meal I had in China was the hotel brunch at $40USD. The food was excellent but way overpriced. Surrounding restaurants are tourist places close to the Shanghai Pearl.

    When to go
I went to Shanghai and Hangzhou in July. The weather was hot (35-37C) and humid (70-90%) but I knew that and dressed accordingly.
    Getting there
I used Cathay Pacific airlines primarily because I got a good price. The service was impeccable and designed to help travelers prevent jet lag.
    Getting around
Taxis are challenging to get in Shanghai and drivers may reject taking you to your destination. Beware of private cars and gypsy cabs because they charge double the taxi fare. The subway system is excellent and accessible. Walking is fine and safe.
    Must see
If you are into architecture, The Bund is a must-see.

    “One of Shanghai's best”

The site was fantastic, one of the best locations in town. Right on the river and next to the Pearl town. You couldn't get a better location and a better hotel than the Oriental Riverside. The service was impecable. The staff was professional, polite, and helpful. All spoke very good English. The Expedia rate was fantastic and as always, booking through Expedia was very smooth and painless.

Area around hotel. Very senic, plenty of retsaurants and convenient for river cruises and rest of city. Only about 40 minutes by cab from airport (Pudong)

“A distinctive place to stay in Shanghai”

In addition to its unmistakable facade that features two large globes, the Oriental Pearl has an opulent lobby and very comfortable rooms, some of which have a great view across the river toward the Bund. It also has a conventient location at the foot of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, near a subway stop and at the entrance to the "Sightseeing Tunnel" that passes beneath the river. The breakfast buffet was very complete. Unfortunately, while I was there, the hotel's spa and swimming pool were both still under construction, which was a disappointment. But it was a very welcome place to return to each evening after a day at Expo 2010.

    Area recommendations
The Oriental Riverside is on the Pudong side of the river, just at the base of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. I stayed here because I was in Shanghai for Expo 2010, which was on the same side of the river. But I think most people coming to Shanghai for leisure travel would prefer to stay on the other side of the river, near the Bund and Nanjing Road.
    Getting around
I bought a "Shanghai Public Transportation Card" (at the nearby Metro entrance -- you have to buy it from the attendant, not from one of the machines, as far as I could tell). I paid 100 RMB which covered the 20 RMB deposit plus an additional 80 RMB of subway travel. Since I was only in Shanghai for four days, this gave me virtually unlimited access to the Metro, which is very clean, efficient, and easy to navigate (although sometimes quite crowded, too). It's a great way to get around.

“Only fit for thin single traveler with no other choices”

Given the amount of great hotels in Shanghai, there is no reason to stay at this hotel. It is not an "international class" hotel and they must pander exclusively to the Chinese tourist crowd coming in on buses.
