Roth Travel Guide

Tourist Guide
Roth
Just 15 miles south of Nuremberg lies the charming town of Roth, embedded in the idyllic nature of the Franconian lake scenery.

Take a city trip to Roth to explore the historic old town, enjoy the cultural programme of the city, discover the conservation areas around Rothsee Lake while hiking or take a bicycle tour along the Main-Danube Canal. The canal is approximately 106 miles long and hosts the annual Challenge Roth triathlon.

Every July, the otherwise quaint town of Roth in Middle Franconia is transformed into the international hotspot of the triathlon world. Top athletes from around the world come to Roth and regularly deliver record performances. Even some world records have been broken during the triathlon in Roth. The finish is on the former grounds of the horticultural show which blossomed in Roth in 2003. The former grounds are now connected to a city park filled with beautiful trees.

But your mini-break to Roth will include more than just sporting events as you can also enjoy cultural events. The Kulturfabrik is home to many theatre performances and cabaret shows. It also serves as a location for exhibitions and concerts. One concert that has established itself is the Roth Blues Days Festival which draws numerous visitors to take a city trip to Roth. The Kulturfabrik building also impresses with its architecture, combining modern and historic elements. A former factory building from the year 1900 was transformed into a glass-encased cultural institution.

This Franconian city has a number of historic sights to offer and you can discover them all during a short trip to Roth. Roth was first mentioned in the records during the 11th century and was officially recognised in the 14th century. Construction of the city church began during that time and the tower still dominates the cityscape today. This protestant church was reconstructed numerous times during the course of the centuries. Today it is preserved as an aisle-less church in the Margrave style.

While on a city trip to Roth, be sure to also visit the Margrave castle Ratibor. This hunting lodge built in the style of the early German Renaissance was constructed from 1535 to 1538 by Margrave George the Pious of Brandenburg-Ansbach. The interior of the lodge was redecorated during the 19th century with marvellous ceiling frescoes depicting motifs from antique mythology and tapestries with scenes from Homer’s Odyssey. During the summer, the picturesque courtyard of the hunting castle serves as the stage for the performances of the courtyard festival.

"Nice and clean room with a kitchenette. The only thing that bugged me was that the queen bed is two single beds pushed together."

Brilliant apartment
"This is really an amazing place. Home away from home. So central and easy to reach. Modern finishes. I was here for work and the only downfall was they say you have use of the washing machine in the basement on their website but this is not the case. I mailed them to ask and no response."
