“Hotel Santa Maria”
A great value hotel in a proper location where you can rub shoulders with real residents of Rome rather than other tourists. Excellent ambience with a superb garden area. Comfortable room with all usual facilities. Staff very helpful and all in all an excellent place to stay with good restaurants and bars nearby.
“Hidden Gem!”
This hotel is in a great part of Trastevere. It is hard to find, but once you do it is quiet and safe. The hotel is down a gated alley with 24 hour desk staff to assist you and a beautiful courtyard. The breakfast is more than the basic continental. The food and the cappucinos are GREAT tasting and included in the price. The site is very clean. Really our only complaint is that the maids are tight with the shampoo. We stayed for 3 nights but had to finally ask for more shampoo since they never left more. The cost per night is a little on the high side but overall was worth it. We would definately recommend it.
“Roman Experience”
Cute Hotel, Great breakfast and nice people. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get the real feel of Rome and likes it simple. It is not an ordinary hotel with long halls and bellman..so if you like that don't stay here.
“Miraculous”
A stone's throw from a tourist area buzzing with nightlife - we were worried it would be noisy, even though it claimed to be in a quiet spot. We were amazed to enter a sympathetically built, low rise hotel arranged around a peaceful, cool and charming garden. An oasis of calm. Breakfast offered a great selection and perfect coffee. Staff were professional. Rooms were spotless. Mattresses were very comfortable. If I was going to be picky I would say the thinness of the room walls could lead to disturbance from neighbours - however during our stay all guests responded to the peacefulness of the environment and conducted themselves with great respect for fellow guests.
“Quiet Oasis in Busy Neighborhood”
On our first vist to the Trastevere area of Rome we found this hotel to be a pleasant surprise. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The courtyard setting is beautiful and tranquil with all the excitement of the neighborhood just around the corner. The room was clean and comfortable.
“Lovely Place to Stay in Rome”
Hotel Santa Maria is located in Trastavere - a lovely, quiet area of Rome filled with narrow cobblestone streets and lots of good restaurants. We were in Rome at the end of August and it was extremely hot and crowded. We certainly enjoyed going back to Trastavere to relax. The hotel offers a nice breakfast buffet with great coffee in the morning. There is a delightful orange grove with small tables covered with beautiful tablecloths which is a nice place to have breakfast in the morning or enjoy a glass of wine in the afternoon. There is a bar with complementary appetizers in late afternoon. The staff was very helpful, offering maps, suggestions, and calling cabs when needed. We walked to almost all the major sites in Rome. The room was small (true for most places in Italy we found) but tastefully decorated and very clean. If we go back to Rome, I would certainly stay at Hotel Santa Maria again. Trastavere gets lively on weekend evenings. The hotel is in a quiet corner so you can enjoy the festivities if you like but still retire to a quiet room when ready.
“Nearly Perfect”
The room was spotless, sunny, airy and comfortable. The orange tree filled courtyards were our haven to relax and re-energize ourselves for our next foray into our explorations of Rome. The breakfasts were satisfying. The cappuccino was excellent. At 5:30 every afternoon there was an aperitivo that included the best bruschetta we have ever had and our favorite part of the Hotel Santa Maria, Giampietro. We looked forward every day to chatting with him and hearing from him suggestions for our outtings the next day. We found the location of the hotel to be perfectly convenient. We were able to easily walk to buses and trolleys and even to many final destinations, such as the forum, colosseum and vatican. Also, the piazza Santa Maria, which is only two blocks from the hotel, and the rest of the neighborhood immediately adjacent to the hotel, is full of wonderful restaurants and shops. The single, very minor, criticism we had of our entire experience at the hotel, was that the office staff, while helpful, dealt with us in a condescending manner. The waitstaff, housekeeping staff, and as mentioned above, Giampietro, were all friendly and wonderful. During eight days of exploring many nooks and crannies of Rome we saw no where else that we would have rather stayed.
“Lovely place to stay in Rome.”
My family of four recently spent 6 nights at hotel Santa Maria. Look no further. This is a great spot. Clean large room, free wifi, wonderful breakfast, helpful staff, great neighborhood and walking distance to everything in Rome.
“A great find.”
Almost do not want to share this wonderful hotel. Quiet, charming, hidden off a tiny street behind Santa Maria in Trastevere, this hotel gives comfort, privacy, with rooms facing onto a patio circled by orange trees. Splendid breakfast, lovely late afternoon nibbles, great location, warm and effiicient staff -- a great place.
“Gem, off the beaten path.”
It's just across the Tiber River in Trestaverre within 2 blocks of the river. Cute, narrow cobblestone streets create a real feel of neighborhood. We walked all over Rome and to the Vatican...but, we walk a lotin NC. The entire hotel ( maybe a former convent) is one story wrapping around a orange treed courtyard. Rooms adequate, very clean, staff friendly and very helpful with details.

Trastevere - Monteverde, Rome, Italy: Across the River Tiber, Trastevere is a well-established boho chic quarter, full of local character. The patchwork of tiny, cobbled streets houses many bars, good restaurants and buzzing nightlife spots. There is also a treasure trove of medieval churches. In its own piazza, the beautiful Santa Maria in Trastevere has shimmering golden mosaics and was probably Romes first Christian basilica, founded in 222 AD.
