A trip to Ribe is a journey through time and you can experience relics from the Ice Age, the Viking age and the Middle Ages.
The Ice Age left a part of the Jutland coast significantly different than the rest of country's coasts, which among other things, means that you can walk out to the islands off the coast when the tide allows. You will also have ample opportunity to sample the delicacies from the sea when you are in Ribe. The Vikings founded the town and you can experience this for yourself when you visit.
Ribe Cathedral is the symbol of the town, not just because of the size of the church, which means that you can see it from a great distance in the flat landscape. You can also enjoy the view of the church as you walk around the town.
When you come into the church, you will see several different styles, which are a testament to many years of additions and alterations. Here you can experience Denmark's only five-nave church and spectacular views of the marshland. On the way up into the tower you will find Ribe Cathedral Museum, where there is an exhibition that shows the consequences of the reformation.
Ribe is called Denmark's oldest town as the Vikings founded the town and it was home to a market. In the Viking Museum you can learn more about how the Vikings founded the town and how it developed through time. In Ribe Viking Centre you will find a reconstruction of the town to scale, which gives you the opportunity to experience life in the Viking age.
Regardless of whether you are on a weekend break in Ribe, or if you have more time in the area, you should not miss Vadehavet, which is an internationally protected wetlands area. At low tide you can walk to the islands, but you can also go by the Mandø bus, which is a specially constructed bus pulled by a tractor. Departure times depend on the tides. Experience a rich animal life with many birds and fish, and see the seals sunbathe on the sandbanks. You can even eat oysters directly from the sea or bring mussels home to cook.
In Ribe and surrounding areas you will not be bored with all the opportunities that the town and area have to offer. Here you will find something for everyone with a focus on history and the effect on the area today.
