Reunion

Tourist Guide
Reunion featuring a lake or waterhole and a waterfall
This rugged French tropical island offers beautiful scenery, wildlife and adventure. Hike up an active volcano, dive in coral reefs and embrace the island's culture.

Réunion is a spectacularly scenic mountainous French island in the middle of the Indian Ocean. See lunar-like lava landscapes, dense forests, ragged mountain peaks and one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Reminders that Réunion is a French overseas territory are everywhere, from the gendarmes and boulangeries to the cuisine and language.

Outdoor pursuits are popular on the island. Go trekking or biking through the three cirques, volcanic valleys encircled by mountains. Venture into the forests on a bird-watching expedition. Among the species you may see are the Réunion stonechat and the zebra dove.

Climb to the top of Piton des Neiges, one of the island’s two volcanoes. At 10,070 feet (3,070 metres), this is the highest mountain on Réunion. On the lower slopes, explore the biological reserve that features more than 200 plant varieties. Réunion’s other volcano, Piton de la Fournaise, erupts almost every year. Take a guided tour to the top and peer inside the smoking crater.

Réunion has a lot to offer for outdoor adventures. Paraglide above the beaches of St. Leu on the west coast and surf its huge waves. Canyon down waterfalls and mountains and scuba dive in the coral reefs surrounding the island. Go rafting along fast-flowing sections of the Rivière Sainte Suzanne.

Amid Réunion Island’s grand volcanic landscapes are a number of towns and villages. Visit St. Denis, Reunion's capital for cultural attractions and shops. Study the collection of modern art in the Musée Léon Dierx and learn about the natural history of Indian Ocean islands at the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle. Shop for clothes in trendy boutiques and dine in French-style bistros. Stroll around the mountain village of Hell-Bourg and bathe in the thermal waters of Cilaos.

Reach Réunion by flying into Roland Garros International Airport near St. Denis. Alternatively, arrive by ferry from Mauritius and Madagascar and get around by bus, taxi or rental car. Enjoy the island’s laid-back lifestyle, natural splendour and Gallic culture.
