Of great importance to the Bolivian people, Sucre’s main square was the birthplace of the nation and continues to be a place of celebration.

The grand colonial square of Plaza 25 de Mayo is where Bolivia’s quest for independence was announced. For centuries the square has been at the heart of the nation, and today it remains in the hearts of Sucre residents. During the day, see the square as a relaxing destination with shaded walkways, landscaped gardens and a laid-back atmosphere. Return as the sun begins to set, when Plaza 25 de Mayo and the streets that surround it become one of Sucre’s key entertainment districts.

Plaza 25 de Mayo is lined by some of the most important buildings in Bolivia’s constitutional capital. It was in the Casa de la Libertad, on the northwestern edge of the square, that Bolivia’s declaration of independence was signed in 1825. Look for the statue of Bolivia’s liberator, Antonio José de Sucre, located within the square. Admire the stunning Sucre Cathedral, one of the region’s major architectural and religious attractions, overlooking the square.

Dine around Plaza 25 de Mayo on food from street vendors. Try local delicacies including buñuelos (fried dough balls) and tucumanas (meat-filled pastries), two popular Bolivian snacks. If you prefer a seat with your meal select from a range of restaurants in the surrounding area. After dinner, enjoy a glass of local beer from a lively bar or sample Sucre’s famous chocolate at a specialty café.

As well as featuring food vendors, Plaza 25 de Mayo becomes a makeshift marketplace at certain times of the week. Pick up handicrafts and souvenirs from local vendors.

Reach Plaza 25 de Mayo on foot from most areas of the city or ride buses that stop in several spots nearby. Parking in the area can be hard to find due to its central location. The square is open at all times but is at its liveliest around sunset. There is no fee to visit the square. Come here during the Christmas season to see the spectacular lighting display.
