Poor value bad location

Posted 29-Apr-2015
Pros: Free wifi
Cons: 1. More choice at breakfast. 2. More entrances, I parked about 10 feet from my room but had to walk around the entire hotel to enter hotel.
Location: It is around 1.5 miles from nearest village and 11 miles from York. Best thing to do here is to have an early night.
I was expecting the bad location but was not expecting the fairly basic accomodation block. Didn't have an evening meal so no comment there. I was however disappointed with the very basic breakfast buffet. Only redeeming factor is the free wifi. I will save some money and go back to the IBIS York Centre for my next visit to York.

This hotel is a conference centre with nice grounds, comfortable rooms and a great breakfast. It was excellent value for money.

Quiet hotel in rural location near York.

Posted 16-Jun-2014
Pros: Cleanliness, quietness.
Cons: Parking, reception, decor, lifts, menu, food, staff. It has huge potential to be so much better than it is.
Location: Easy to find and easy drive into York.
Our 2 night stay was almost reasonable value for money and it was clear that the hotel required some updates and improvements. First impressions were of a once grand country house with a large extension from the 1960s and at the reception desk we noticed the very obviously tatty and worn chairs with large holes in the material and foam padding on show which the receptionists had. The room was basic having a comfy bed and very quiet. The plug in the sink leaked so that the basin didn't hold water for very long. The extractor didn't work either. We ate in the restaurant on the first night and thought the menu basic and food just about OK. We were served quickly for starters and mains but had a long wait for dessert. Unrealistically priced compared to the excellent restaurants in York itself. Breakfast was a bit odd on the second morning. As the waiter brought us a pot of tea, he spilled it over the far side of our table, looked at me and then my wife and just walked off, leaving us to mop it up. The toast machine was broken so a waitress was taking orders for toast at the table. When it arrived, it was one very small slice cut into four making one portion not much more than a crust. On departure, the receptionist kept her concentration on her computer screen by chewing gum and showing a distinct lack of interest in us. There was no itemised bill or explanation of the charges, she just said "£77.70 please". Website not a true reflection. Disappointing!

Great hotel near York

It was a great location just down the street from York. The staff was friendly, especially the bartender who was both friendly and excellent at his job! I would recommend this hotel to a friend.

Nice hotel but staff not very accommodating

Posted 17-May-2014
Pros: Hotel location and surroundings
Cons: Staff manners, politeness, a course on diplomacy maybe.
Location: Need to travel into York for main attractions. Purchased my wife's new car at Mercedes in York!
I booked a room at short notice but expected it to be a higher quality. The hotel itself was nice and in good surroundings. We were refused entry to an evening meal one night as we had not booked earlier but the restaurant was not obviously busy. An earlier evening one of the female staff was quite curt with us regarding going to check if we could go into the restaurant. We had asked if we could dine there that evening and the response was we could and it would be about 9.30pm. We went to the bar for a drink. When we went to check at about 9.35pm, however, we were told abruptly later by the lady concerned that it was up to us to come up to the restaurant to check and not them!

Nice hotel.

Used as a base hotel then travel to places from there. Nice quiet hotel. Didn't see much of it as we eat out for all meals as I am a fussy eater and didn't like one thing on the menu.

Good position for touring and about 20 minutes fro

Posted 22-Apr-2014
Pros: Staff were very friendly and it was in a good position.
Cons: Can't think of anything offhand
Location: Quite near to Knaresborough and Harrogate and York
Not too pleased when we had our first rrieal. Restaurant had a waiting time so ate in the bar. Had gammon steaks which we had to return as badly burnt. They did replace them without argument but surprised they even served them - most probably due to the fact very busy with coach load of people. Next morning no bacon at breakfast and when we enquired they had run out altogether. However, despite this beginning we did enjoy our 4 night stay.

You get what you pay for

Posted 18-Apr-2014 on Hotels
If this hotel really does have 24 hour room service they certainly keep it quiet. No information about it in the room, and menus show a finish time of 10pm. Public areas ok, but room depressingly small and drab. What you don't see in the attractive picture of this hotel is the large faceless development off frame to the left. Not sympathetic to the older part of the hotel, it resembles a social housing development of flats. Ok if all you need is a bed for the night.
