Memories of Ohana
The location, the ambiance and peacefulness exceeded my expectations a hundred fold! But what truly made the stay so fantastic was how my wife and I were treated like ohana! There was a sadness to leaving because Rochelle (Celle) became our extended family! We plan on strengthening the wonderful way we were treated! Beautiful memories were made! Mahalo nui loa!

My only complaint was brought up with the owner and she was beginning to work on the problem. I love he remote location. You are 20 minutes drive from Volcanoes National Park. The owner was fantastic. You will be in a jungle but without any of the dangers from wild animals. I am planning to revisit here again very soon.

DO NOT STAY here! The staff is rude, the place unsafe. I actually was made to feel so unsafe there I had to leave and book a hotel somewhere else. When I complained they called me unstable and refused even a partial refund.

Nice for totally getting away from city life. Be prepared for friendly goats and no TV.

A house in the forest
Please be aware that this is not a hotel! It is more like an AirBnB. You are pretty much on your own in a house (assuming other guests are not there), though the host did make an effort to check in with us a couple of times and seemed friendly enough. When we first arrived however the host was not particularly inviting and the interaction left us feeling a little bit insulted, which is not a welcome we expected. This accommodation is relatively far away from any restaurants or attractions and you will definitely need a car if you stay here! It is not a convenient location but it is certainly a rainforest experience -- you will fall asleep to the sounds of frogs and insects. The kitchen and living room are well-equipped so if you're looking for a place where you can cook your own meals this may be suitable (and ideal; it was a bit of a pain to drive back down the gravel roads to the highway to go out to eat if we stopped off at the accommodation first). Solar energy is available consistently (we could use an outlet to charge our phones or power a lamp, and a string of lights in the bathroom) and the main lights are powered by the generator, which was on only one of the nights we were there. WiFi is available on-demand but limited to 4gb a month so your use is restricted. The host will ask you if you've turned everything off whenever you leave.

Cold. Dark. Wet. Far from everithing
First of all, too far away from everything. It is in rain forest, so it is wet and cold. Dryer didn't work. So, I was drying all my laundry in my car wile traveling. There is no electricity. Small generator available, but you cant run it after 9pm. It means there is constantly dark. I was using my battery head light. there is power comes from a battery, but it is all very limited. WiFi is very limited, you have to turn on invertor first to use it, but there is only 4G per month. So, no Netflix or YouTube. just check your email and dont forget to turn it off, over-wise bathroom will not work. Even at sunny day house is dark and depressive.

Beautiful rainforest guesthouse, self-contained.
We loved Michelle’s guesthouse near Hilo. Everything was better than described. She offered to purchase groceries for us as we were arriving on Christmas Eve. Directions to this rather remote location in the middle of the rain forest were easy to follow – even at night when it was raining. A great place to stay, especially if you are doing activities around Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Be prepared to walk in mud due to frequent rains and please note that the living room – which contains the futon bed – had screens only at this time. It could be too cold for some at night. The sound of the tropical birds, frogs and insects are quite something through the night. A wonderful experience awaits you. Michelle was helpful and available next door if we needed her.

Jungle cottage
It is a 20 min from National park. Very clean and pretty. No traffic noises only frog chirps and birds. Quiet with Windows closed. Cool on that side of island. Dirt road last mile to hotel.

If you want to go off the grid
This felt much more like air bnb than a hotel. If you're looking to go off the grid and really get away from it all, then this is the place for you. There is a generator providing electricity for when you need it, and it does have on-demand water heaters for the showers. Otherwise there are oil lamps and candles to get the full experience of staying in the rain forest. Yes, that's what the Fern Forest region of Volcano is. There are dirt roads, but you don't need 4WD. Shared bathroom and full kitchen, but lots of common space including a living room with books and games and a yoga room on the screened in porch. Michelle was there to show us the ropes. She was super-friendly and helpful, even though I mixed up the dates of my reservation. Thanks Michelle!! There is wifi available when the generator is on, and it's only 25 min drive to Volcano national park or Hilo. A cheaper alternative to staying in Volcano village.
