“Perfect Romantic Getaway (on a budget)”
The room, a single queen with a fireplace and balcony, was very nice. The bed was comfortable and the room was large and airy, with lots of room to move around. Our balcony overlooked the pool and spa area, so there were people out playing the whole time, but it was never too loud or unpleasant in any way - and the noise disappeared completely the moment the glass sliding door was closed. We didn't use the fireplace the first night, but the complimentary Duraflame log was there for our use. It warmed up the room a bit too much, but...fire's hot, right? It also set the atmosphere perfectly. All in all, this room made us feel like we were alone in our own private world - exactly what we wanted. The hotel is located in an area that seems mostly residential, but that only adds to the charm. I certainly never expected to run into a doe and her fawn when I went out for a stroll, but they passed only a few feet from me, creating another magical moment on a perfect weekend. I've seen others complain about the Continental Breakfast. We didn't use it ourselves, waking late and wanting to explore the local restaurants and diners.
“Not Impressed.”
I stayed at the Monarch Resort the night before the Pacific Grove Triathlon. It was not far from the event, so very convienent in that regard. However, for a hotel in a major tourist area, I found it to be a little worn out. The room I stayed in had a fireplace, and boy, did that room reek of stale fireplace smell. Ick. The room was adequate, nothing special. The fixtures are dated, and the bedding the usual hotel standard. The parking lot to my room required the use of an elevator, which was a pain, since I had to make 4 trips to the car for all my tri gear (bike, personal belongings, etc). The front desk staff was helpful, and gave me some breakfast items to take to my room the night before, since I was getting up so early to get to the start of my race. If you're looking for a good location near the start of the Pac Grove Tri, but don't care about the hotel interior, then this hotel is going to be adequate. Next year I'm going to rent a room in the hotel across the street. A friend of mine stayed there, and their rooms (less roomy) were right on street level - with immediate access to their cars.
