At the oldest art museum in Texas, you will find a stunning collection of works by 20th-century greats, as well as pieces by contemporary artists.

The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is one of the top highlights of the city’s cultural district. This wonderful art museum is the oldest in the state and is also among the oldest in the entire western region of the U.S. Spend a few hours here and you can expect to see major artworks by 20th-century icons of art, as well as pieces by contemporary artists still working today.

As you approach the museum, you will appreciate its architecture from a long way off. Its eye-catching glass form makes it one of the most recognizable buildings in the city. Although the museum had its beginnings as early as 1892, this building, designed by acclaimed architect Tadao Ando, opened in 2002. Come back after the sun goes down to see it at its most impressive, when the bright lights from the inside are reflected in the water in front of the building.

Step inside and wander through the galleries. The works in the museum’s collection are mostly drawn from 1945 and later. Art movements from the 20th century are well represented here, especially pop art and minimalism. Look for works by artists such as Pollock, Warhol and Rothko.

See what special exhibitions are on before you visit. The museum’s temporary exhibits cover a wide range of artists working across different media. Expect to see work by artists as varied as Ron Mueck and Takashi Murakami.

Plan time to stop at Café Modern, which offers upscale dining. See what’s on sale at The Modern Shop too. Here you will find merchandise from current exhibitions and the permanent collections.

The museum’s location in the Fort Worth Cultural District means it is ideally placed for discovering other fantastic cultural attractions. View more art at the Kimbell Art Museum or the Amon Carter Museum of American Art or opt for something completely different by visiting the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame, which pays tribute to inspiring women from the American West.

Note that the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is closed on Mondays. Your admission fee will cover all temporary exhibitions as well as the permanent collection.
