The staff were excellent. Very friendly. Our room was beautiful. Shower was great. This is one of the prettiest places I've seen. There are a lot of hills and stairs but we'll worth the trek.

The deluxe grotto suite was beautiful, spacious and clean. I misunderstood the description thinking there were two beds rather than the actual bed for two people. The staff brought in another comfortable twin bed to solve the issue. The location was perfect- so close to many options for dining and shopping, as well as the bus stop for getting to the off site parking. Breakfast was very good and was made available earlier than usual to accommodate our early departure. I highly recommend this property for anyone visiting Matera!

The property staff was very friendly and helpful. The location was practically in the sassi caves. The hotel itself was comfortable but we found ants in the bed. The breakfast was delicious and offered fresh and local fooods.

Check in was easy and friendly. Choice of rooms was offered, a nice surprise. We opted for the cave. Was very nice. Breakfast was a pre-order situation (they have to get their order to the bakery), so no buffet here if that's your thing. Swift and easy checkout.

We stayed in a cave room and it was so neat. It is very close to many places and was nice to be able to walk around. The one downside was it was a little bit of a walk from where we had to park, but we also knew that when booking, so no fault to the hotel there.

This was exactly what we needed for a night in Matera. The service was exceptional. I thought it was really kind that they packed a to-go breakfast for us when we told them we had to leave at 6 am for a flight the morning of check out. Great location within walking distance to everything.

Our experience was excellent. Francesco at the desk was very helpful with local information. The room was very good. The location was easy to access via our shuttle from the Damasco garage, and close to restaurants. We enjoyed our stay at Caveoso very much.

The hotel is under construction right now, but understood as it is the off season. The room was great and the town was so amazing to walk around!!!

Perfect location in the sassi
This was my my second time staying here. The location and views were perfect. The hosts allowed us to upgrade to a larger room with a terrace. The attention to covid was excellent. I would recommend this hotel to couples.

Good but parking is expensive
We were treated well and provided with good information about Matera. However if you have a car parking is tricky or expensive. For hassle free service where they take the car and park and return it . It 20 euro's a night so we only stayed one night.

The location of the hotel is excellent. It is right near center square There is a very small hike to get to the location, but well worth it. Staff is very friendly breakfast great selection

Really pretty experience in a cave hotel. Room is spacious, there is no hair conditioner in the room so bring your own! Room is not decorated in a cute or stylish way but it is cool to be in a cave like room. Has potential to be really cool if it was more stylish.

Pretty nice place - but could be improved
This hotel is pretty newly renovated, so it's clean and in good condition, but we felt there were a few things that made it less than it could have been. The biggest is that they do not turn on the air conditioning evidently until the end of June. This is much too late - the weather was in the mid to high 80s in early June, and this is particularly important because some rooms (like ours) do not have good ventilation, and the building bakes in the sun all day long. Our only window opened up on the entry courtyard, where people were talking and smoking until late, so we couldn't open the window. It was quite hot at night. Also, the room only had those very cheap little plastic glasses which crush when you pick them up, which made me feel like I was in a cheap motel. Regarding the service, the young lady who worked during the afternoons was fantastic - personable, helpful, charming, but the grump who worked in the morning should be a receptionist at a trash collection site for all the charm and assistance that he offered. He was not helpful in the least. This place has good bones, and is in a good location, but honestly, if these things didn't change, I'd look for another place the next time I came to Matera.

Great location. Nice room, and amenities. Views of the caves. Staff were helpful. Our gps failed. Finding the place was impossible. A staff member met us at a gas station so we could follow to the hotel.

Lovely Stay
We stayed for four nights and found the hotel perfect. Room number two was huge and had a great view of the Sassi. Centrally located for exploring. The continental breakfast was good and constantly being replenished. Very friendly staff. Wi fi was a bit hit and miss but you are on holiday so not a problem.

The cave rooms were excellent (we had 2) . A couple of tweaks would have helped - room 5 the shower fitting didn't work so taking a shower was a balancing act and the fans in both bathrooms were really loud. However the rooms were atmospheric, the staff were very helpful and welcoming, the breakfasts were tasty and the location couldn't have been better. A great stay overall.

Hotel address is in a pedestrian area, however, with a bit of understanding of the 2 access roads, the hotel can almost be reached by car. For "first time" visitors, however, location is very difficult to find. Hotel could have provided basic directions in advance to ease arrival. Local area is very nice and absolutely worth visiting. Room was very, very simple. Bathroom desperately needed a paint job. Front desk staff not particularly friendly and communicative. The use of the English language appeared a significant challenge.

extremley hard to find good position
Had to drag our suitcases up stairs along heavily cobbled laneways up a steep hill, not advised of this. Hotel manager very unhelpful and quite rude. Our room was very basic. The curtains on the only window/door were not big enough, people walked right past our room so we had to close the shutters for our privacy. Nice view from this room when we could open the window. Facilities in the room were terrible, bed uncomfortable. After 2 nights we had enough and checked out.

It’s certainly an experience living in a cave. Our room was the deluxe suite and the room was beautifully decorated and huge. The air conditioning was not working perfectly so it was a little stuffy but very pleasant.

We loved the hotel and location. Staff is required to help with liggage as there are a lot of steps. There should be no extra cost to get someine to help with luggage as the atea is difficult to get to other than that an amazing experience

Authentic hotel in a cave
The location is great! Convinient car parking service for small fee. We booked the junior suite. The cave room was spacious opened to a large terrace with a nice bathroom and AC. The breakfast was good. All the staffs are very friendly with amazing service. Highly recommended

Our room was very damp and had a strong smell of some kind of air freshener. The dampness made the sheets on the bed uncomfortable. The air conditioner worked sporadically. The location was good. No mention was made that we had to carry our bags up a cobble stone hill to get to the room. There was no porter or help available. Also the parking situation is unworkable. We had to pay a porter 20 Euros to take our car to a parking area over a kilometer away from the hotel. I would not recommend the hotel to anyone over 50 years of age due to the difficulty getting the bags to and from the room. The staff was friendly and helpful but the novelty of the hotel in the cave was not what we expected.

Location - poor. Needle in a haystack and residents only street parking for 15-20 mins radius. Nearest car park (50 cents per hour - even over night) is 12 mins walk away with lots of steps to climb. Hotel is near old town but a trek to get to the lively centre. Couldn't find any supermarket in town. Staff - rude Girl at reception on arrival was fine she gave us the basic information. But don't assume water in fridge is complimentary. After waiting 10 mins for old man at reception to finish his phone call I asked about the bottles. He barked back "small bottle 1€ large 2€". We left them only to be questioned at checkout if we took them and then the chambermaid was sent straight into our room to check. So we left feeling like they thought we were liars. Breakfast - poor. For 100€ a night we expected a hot option. Just standard flavoured croissant and biscuits, no milk for cereal only yogurt. Ants crawling around the ham/salami/cheese section. Room - disappointing The reception is built out from cave walls so looks nice but room we stayed in is a manmade barrel ceiling, so - fake cave. We could have been in any hotel anywhere. The air conditioning was old so very hard to control also. There seemed to be a big deal made about the Sky box in the room, which might be good if you speak Italian but no English channels - not even sky news. Bed was fine, shower fine. Overall we wished we had saved some money and stayed nearer the centre or closer to where we could park.

We chose this hotel for two reasons. The location and the parking that was advertised. First, THERE IS NO ON SITE PARKING AT THIS HOTEL. You can drive over a mile to the nearest parking garage and walk back to the hotel, or you can pay "20 euro" to have someone come pick it up, but we were mysteriously charged 25 euro upon pick up even though we were there less than a full 24 hour time period. Next, the hotel rooms pictured in the advertisement show beautiful views of the old town. We were given a room on the ground floor with no view, no air conditioning (broken), and a 3 inch mattress that caved in when you sat on it. While the location was great and the breakfast service was nice, we would stay somewhere else if we ever came back.

Stunning location
Great views and right at the centre of the town in the heritage area. Good restaurants and little shops nearby, very handy for the walk down into the gorge, and visiting the main rock church, opposite. Matera is stunning, a very special landscape which has to be seen up close to be appreciated, photographs really don't do it justice. It's the 2019 European City of Culture, visit soon before everyone else gets to hear about it, mostly Italian visitors when we were there.
