There are rats in there! Can't recommend it
The staff is great but the overall place is so badly dirt. The is full of stains. The male toilet have water leak and the kitchen is pretty much the same standard. The worst thing is that I stayed here for 3 nights but in one of them a rat got inside my backpack and ate some biscuits that I had just bought. Exactly! A rat! It left a hole in my bag and ate my food while it was in the room. How can you accept a place where they don't even have decent pest control?

Very convenient location, but incredibly grim. Wouldn’t mind if it was dirt cheap but for the price there are probably much better places to choose from.

Not my worst but definitely not my best hostel!
Lovely staff, check in and out nice and easy. Free very basic breakfast (both in terms of provision and quality), excellent free WiFi. Mattress on the bed was not great, but the bedding was awesome. Showers and toilets for men were very badly signed, and they were in dire need of modernising. The shower worked on 10 second bursts at most and refused to get hot. The noisy dorm-mates all night really put me off a lot too, I won't be rushing to stay here again

Nothing really wrong with the property. It's the inside of the property. I couldn't use the toilet for example. Under health & safety, this business can be closed if not dealt with promptly. There was virtually no water in the shower, water keeps dripping. There was a lot of noise with other room and we were interrupted about 3am in the morning as one of the guest was sleeping on the wrong bed, a member of staff had to sort this but I did wake people up as conversations went on!

Thank you for leaving a review. Due to our central location in the Northern Quarters it can be quiet loud till late some nights. Next time come down to our 24hr reception and grab some earplugs to help with the noise. Regards Hatters Hostel Manchester!!

Filthy dump (Newton Street). The other one around the corner on Hilton Street looks better from the outside and is probably what they used for the website photos. If you just need the cheapest bed to crash that you can get in the Northern Quarter and don't care about drunken partying noise all night, banging on your door in the early hours, dirt everywhere, cracked windows letting in draughts, no guest lift and men's and women's bathrooms every other floor which are disgusting with showers that just abut dribble then you'll be fine here. You get what you pay for, maybe.

Chewing gum under top bunk. Beds held together with tape. Showers are pitiful. Took payment for room night before and threatened to cancel if not paid even though it was booked as pay at property. Reception staff very friendly

Very unhappy with the hostel. On the website it should mention how many floors and stairs they have so we know. Check in lady was nice but apart from that I was very very unhappy. Room wasn't in best condition, came back to room and my door was wind up and when I called reception he just say oh ok, you sure that you closed it properly before you left and I said yea. He wasn't going to enquire about it. Then struggled to sleep as was so uncomfy and was a nightmare carrying a suitcase down 4th floor stairs. So unhappy would like a refund if I'm honest

While this hostel is an amazing location within Manchester city center, the quality is subpar. Cleanliness was not what it could’ve been and the bed was incredibly uncomfortable. Most of the lockers were broken and would not funcional to put a lock on the door. I had to go to another floor to find a working locker for my belongings. This was my first ever hostel experience and I was not very impressed. However, if you’re looking for a good location to crash for a night or two, this is an adequate choice.

Not good but does strangely grow on you
Finding that British hostels are not great! Windows without curtains, beds were squeaky, mattresses were threadbare, and duvets dirty - after a night or two you did realise it wasn't too bad as there were no bugs. Definitely recommend going for the 4-bed rooms as there were some dodgy people hanging around elsewhere! Beware that the lift is not for general use so you may have to climb a lot of stairs. Did however meet some other fantastic people.

Rooms had a poor little sticker on the wall to give some sort of smidge of design. Pillows were so small and useless. Showers gave you zero privacy. Dear owner why don't you stay there and see how you feel. Breakfast was sufficient. Good location and helpful staff mostly.

Lousy place to stay
Staying currently in Hatters Birmingham and it is way better than the Manchester one. Manchester, has a lift only staff can use so you may have to climb 5 floors. Is generally grimy, old and rundown. Windows that don’t work or broken, shower pressure a dribble at best, no laundry nor not any nearby. Staff are “volunteers” whom reside at the hostel in exchange for 20 hours labour a month, ie illegal immigrant workers, accordingly they do a poor job. Most haven’t been there long so hopeless when giving directions etc. Hostel run pharmacy very pricey. No free breakfast. Poor kitchen. Filthy toilets that don’t flush properly. Staff double booking people so was eoken up both nights by people claiming I was in their bed ( which I wasn’t). Generally a rundown ancient building in a noisy area from pubs, staffed by incompetents Give it a miss.

Terrible stay, one of the worst hostels.
The building was terrible, it was one of the worst. The room was very dirty, the wooden floor are breaking down, it chips and dust. The toilet was worst, it was never cleaned and can't be used at all, I had to hold until the next morning when I checked out the toilet behind the check in counter. More to describe but I think these are worse enough.

Good location, friendly staff, very clean
Five-ten minute walk from the centre of Manchester where all of the shops are, and also a five-ten minute walk to the coach station so is very accessible! We got the 8 bedroom private dorm and it had clean bedding provided, with a clean toilet and shower. Staff were friendly and were helpful in giving us directions. Need your room key to get in/out of the halls and rooms so it seemed very safe in terms of privacy. Very good value for money! Would recommend to those who want to see Manchester rather than stay in the hostel itself. Only negative is that at night we could hear people snoring and talking in the next room so would suggest to bring earplugs

No lift, so be prepared to climb the stairs to the 5th floor Facilities alternate women's on one floor men's on the next, so your room might be on a different floor to a toilet you can use. Very cold in both the bedroom and the toilets. Positives, it's reasonably cheap and central. Only a short walk from central Manchester, entertainment and transport links

Cheap and good location
Very friendly and helpful staff, good location close to Picadilly Gardens (2 minute walk). Needs renovation in my opinion, in particular the rooms (our window wouldn't close and the room was very cold). If you don't like walking up stairs this hostel isn't for you either. Also noticed the fire escape on the 5th floor was padlocked (dangerous hazard). Overall though a good vibe about the place, a good common room where you can meet different people, and a decent price for a centralised hostel.

Great Location
This is the best Hatters for location in Manchester, this just a short 10 minute walk to Manchester Picadilly station. There are 5 floors and a lift, but the lift is only for staff.

Horribly noisy hostel
The hostel has a noisy bar playing loud music until 3 am. Guests also shout at the smoking area at all hours and talk loudly in corridors. Don't book a room if you want to get sleep early.
