“Great hotel”

A lovely old hotel full of character and old world charm. The perfect location for exploring Valletta on foot, or taking the bus or driving further afield. The staff were all helpful and polite, and the room was spotlessly clean and tastefully furnished. The breakfast was fantastic. Can't fault it.

Area recommendations

Valletta is packed full of history, and has many museums well worth visiting. I thought we'd only need a day to explore such a small city, but after 3 days we still hadn't seen everything that we wanted to. Everything is easily accessible on foot. We had hired a car but really didn't need it.

“Old time elegance!”

We loved the hotel and its old-time elegance. The breakfasts and dinner we had there were also extremely good. Our one criticism was that the staff could do with a bit more training: often breakfast tables were not laid up quickly enough and didn't have the correct cutlery, or our table was cleared whilst we were helping ourselves to the English breakfast! Less dropping of china and cutlery would also be an improvement. But none of that marred the enjoyment of our stay. The above comment is just for the hotel management to be aware of.

Area recommendations

Valletta is a very interesting city. Marsaxlokk a delightful fishing village (avoid Sundays). Mdina a true gem. Driving our hire car was a very enjoyable way of seeing the island.

“Well impressed.”

Went for our 25th wedding anniversary. Excellent location for exploring the island. Beautiful hotel and helpful staff. Would definitely stay again if visiting Malta.

“will return to this hotel when we visit malta again”

The Hotel is in a perfect position to walk into Valletta at any time 3/4 minutes and enjoy a selection of good restaurants.Hotel food very good and a heated outdoor pool was superb. The staff were always so attentive to help in any way. Shopping is OK but the Malta experience is superb to learn about the history and culture of the island. There are hop on hop off buses which include a cruise to enable you to see the harbour area of the island. Cannot wait to return.

“Reputation and convienence over value”

This is a '5-star' hotel and the service and accommodations warrant this rating. The hotel is extremely convienent for those wishing to explore Valletta or those wanting a base to explore the rest of Malta. However, as a '5-star' hotel it's prices go along with it (we happened to get a great rate for our stay and mainly wanted it for our convienence). Also, my poor wife practically drowned the bathroom trying to take a shower as it is not very well set up for this purpose. Otherwise, a top-class hotel with great service and convienence.

Area recommendations

Malta is a fantastic place with so much to see and do you couldn't explore it in a lifetime! We managed in the short weekend that we had, to explore Valletta, Mdina, Birgu and the Malta Aviation museum in Ta 'Qali, but there is 99.9% that we didn't see, and would love to. With 7000 years of history and a great diversity of activities a 1000 trips back probably wouldn't let us see it all. The food and the people are fantastic, and we can't wait to return.

“Living in the past”

Rooms need a serious makeover. Food in the Pegasus Brasserie mediocre and the lavish (so called) special buffet in the Phoenicia Restaurant was unimpressive and for the price should have been much better. All staff were most attentive and helpful which somewaht offset the foregoing.

“Best hotel in Valetta”

Staying at Hotel Phoenicia is like stepping back in time. There is a colonial feel to the place, admirably supported by period decor. And the staff have equisite manners; they cannot do enough for you. The hotel location is also fantastic - being less than 5 minutes walk to the bus station and to the main shopping street in Valetta. This was my second trip to the hotel and, I suspect, it won't be my last.

Area recommendations

Check out Rampila restaurant - 10 minutes walk from the hotel; also the War rooms and war museum in Valetta are worth visiting if you are interested in Malta's experience of WW2.

“Great Valletta based hotel”

The Phoencia is a 5 star hotel right by the city gates of Valletta. We were pleasently suprised with the quietness of the location as we expected it to be a little noisy being on the edge of the city but we heard nothing! The pool is a short walk from the hotel though their own lanscaped gardens and is a great escape overlooking the harbour. All the staff were polite, friendly and helpful. Our only criticism if any would be that we didn't have a balcony which had come to expect however we only had a classic room which would probably explain this. If you want one I suggest upgrading! The hotel offered a free shuttle bus to the beach too which was a lovely addition. We would stay again.

“A great stay”

The hotel and its grounds were beautiful, high up overlooking historic Valletta and the its harbours. The staff friendly and helpful. We had a fabulous holiday.

Area recommendations

Churches and palaces interesting to visit - or just walk around the streets. We also went to Hypogeum (we booked well in advance since only 70 visitors allowed daily.) which was great experience. Day trip to Gozo enjoyed as was free shuttle bus ride provided by the hotel to Golden Bay beach - lovely views from the cliffs there. New bus service ( and buses) meant easy transport - not always on time on return trips.
