Area recommendations
I loved all of Fiji. Don't expect the high rise buildings or the upper class houses. If you appreciate the beauty of life you will love it there. When shopping go to all shops and bargain and check out prices as you will find many of the same stuff in many different shops all with different prices especially in Lautoka. Nadi has some great shopping especially Jack's and the Handicraft shop (check out the wooden crafts in both these shops). The markets in each of the towns are great for food products and again bargain to get the best price.
When to go
Well I found that its very humid and hot like Australian summer in March. Nice in the September period and in December like Australian weather mucky when you are waiting for the rains to come. But with all the above months Fiji is still beautiful to see. Plus a bonus staying at hotels you get the air conditioners and can get some relief from the heat of the day or night after you have been out.

Getting around
The best way to get around in Lautoka is to hire a car if you can afford it because you can go anywhere then. Elsewise there is the bus services or taxi services. Its an experience to get around on the buses especially the old open windowed ones but real fun especially for kids. The taxis are good to get from A to B. If you are staying at the Tanoa Waterfront Hotel and have no car the best way to get to town is by taxi service. Important info if you do hire a car and park it in town be aware that if you don't put money into the car meters you will get booked.
What to pack
The first time I went to Fiji I was unsure of what to pack so packed heaps of clothes. DON'T pack too much first lesson. The clothes in Fiji are not too bad a price to buy (even though cheap make with some) and you can wash clothes at hotel or friends will do it for you. Take some toilet wipes just in case you go somewhere and they don't have toilet paper (or buy some toilet paper there). If you love chocolate take it with you (but make sure you have a fridge to put it in as it will melt) as it is very expensive in Fiji and so is cereal to buy. Take swimmers but you can pick up nice towels there at the shops. And another thing shoes, I know as a woman I took shoes for this and that DON'T try to take only 1 good going out shoes and a pair to walk around in as you will do a lot of that. Fiji does not have leather shoes in most of the areas I went to and the styles are not the best (for women that is).
Nightlife
Club Leon in Lautoka is great to go to if you want some night life entertainment on the weekends.Opens at 9pm and goes till 1am in the morning which is plenty of time to enjoy yourself.
