Explore a city park filled with acres of gardens, water features and activities for the whole family. Choose from scores of paths and places to relax by the water.

While in Fort Myers, plan a visit to Lakes Regional Park, a beautiful area for family fun. Meander through its 279 acres (113 hectares). More than half of the park is covered with water, making it a pleasant inland alternative to the region’s popular beaches on the Gulf of Mexico. Bring a picnic lunch and spend some time enjoying all the park’s land and water playgrounds.

This totally human-made area was a quarry during the 1960s and became a park in the 1980s. The water features came naturally from groundwater and rainfall, creating a superb environment for trees and plants. Over time feature gardens have been established, with two favorites being a large fragrance garden and a children’s garden. Join one of the free guided walks during tourist season.

Children and adults line up for a 15-minute miniature train ride that travels through the park’s northern zone. You’ll also find the Railroad Museum of South Florida, where the train ride originates. Here you can view classic rolling stock and a 1905 locomotive.

Rent a bicycle or surrey to explore the park’s paths or navigate a paddle boat borrowed from the marina.

The Lakes Regional Park area is known as a bird nesting area, with numerous native species, such as ibis, herons, egrets and hawks. Bring binoculars and join the monthly Bird Patrol walk for a real bird-watching treat.

Bring a picnic lunch or purchase snacks from food concessions at the marina. Enjoy eating homemade ice cream as you walk along the lakeshore.

If you stay in one of the nearby hotels or inns, getting to the park on foot or by bike is easy. Otherwise, drive here from the center of Fort Myers in about 20 minutes. Pay for parking. Remember to bring a hat, walking shoes and sunscreen. The site is also accessible for those in wheelchairs.

Lakes Regional Park is open during the day throughout the year. Pets are not allowed.
