The Porta Hotel del Lago was better than we expected. The rooms were very clean, the hotel and grounds are well looked after. Our view of the volcanoes was awesome. The staff were very helpful, polite and courteous. We would definately stay here again. It is a two minute walk to shops and restaurants on Calle Santander.
We spent 2 nights at Hotel Regis this last weekend for a quick adventure while we were in Guatemala for work. The price was significantly lower than the competition, which is shocking because the resort is adorable, well kept, in the perfect location and the staff was friendly and helpful. I'd definitely stay there again.
Overall this is an excellent place for quiet reflection. Absolutely beautiful natural setting. The staff is excellent. They write you ahead of your stay and actually alter the food to your tastes. You must be in good physical condition for this hotel. Of the 4 casas ("rooms") 3 require a great deal of climbing steps on the side of the mountain. These required climbs is the sole reason for the 4 stars on facilities.
They operation solely on solar power. This resulted in the room being so dark during the night that even with every available light in the room you could not read a book. However with with exception of the room lighting, this facilities and are excelletn
The wait staff were very helpful and accomadating. The restaurant food was excellent and the view of the area was probably the best. The location was superb and out of the way enough to not be load or affected by street noise but it was right off the main street. The room was clean and had AC but the bed was a little lumpy. That is the most negative thing I have to say about the place. I have travelled throughout Guatemala and Central America and this place is definatly one to consider on your future travels.
We travelled to San Buenaventura for a quick weekend get-a-way with the kids and had a surprisingly great time here! The two level suites were great, with wonderful views of the lake, fireplace, extra ponchos for the cold, good beds, fully equipped kitchen, great private terrace with carbon grill. The pool area is really nice, well kept gardens. Breakfast was a bit on the expensive side, but good, we had some delicious honey crepes. Hotel staff was scarce at night when we arrived buy took good care of us and even recommended a very friendly Tuk Tuk driver so we could go to Panajachel for dinner (short 5 min ride). Hotel is on the road before getting to downtown Panajachel so driving or Tuk Tuk rental is a must, walking to and from city to hotel might be dangerous at night. But on the upside, hotel it is so much more quiet and relaxing, with nice beach access to Lake Atitlan, than other hotels we've visited in Panajachel.
Highly recommend two restaurants, Circus Bar in Panajachel and a 30-min boat ride to San Pedro to go have blue corn pancakes at Posada de Santiago Hotel y Restaurante. Walking across from hotel entrance is the Atitlan Nature Reserve with interesting activities like zip lines, wooded trails, hanging bridges and a Butterfly Preservation project.
