Looking for a great base for a holiday in the Ardennes? Where you can enjoy both outdoor and cultural activities? Stay in La Roche-en-Ardenne, a picturesque town in the middle of the Ardennes on both banks of the River Ourthe.
La Roche-en-Ardenne has an interesting history and is distinguished by its ruined mediaeval castle. The town has changed hands several times over the centuries and has belonged to an emperor and a number of earls. It's definitely a must-see!
The feudal castle is but a short walk from town – straight uphill. Once at the top, you can enjoy the beautiful view, the falcon show or the enactment of Berthe the ghost. History buffs will enjoy Musée de la Bataille des Ardennes, an impressive museum of the Battle of the Bulge.
If you are holidaying with the whole family, BrandSport is a great destination for outdoor activities. It's about 11 km southwest of La Roche-en-Ardenne. You can go mountain biking, kayaking, rock climbing, horse riding and even explore caves.
Parc à Gibier is about 2 km outside of La Roche-en-Ardenne and a great place to see wildlife, such as wolves, owls and foxes. See their website for information about the opening times.
One of La Roche-en-Ardenne's biggest advantages is that it is on the River Ourthe. Hire a kayak or a rowboat and have a great time on the water. Stop in one of the neighbouring villages for a drink at a sidewalk café or to take a long walk in the countryside. You can also hire a bicycle, which is a great way to explore the area.
La Roche-en-Ardenne doesn't have a train station and is therefore best reached by car. The drive from Calais takes about 3.5 hours. You can also fly to Brussels or Antwerp and hire a car there.
The beautiful castle ruins, its location on the river and proximity to nature makes this little town one of the Ardennes' greatest gems. Discover this beautiful part of Belgium.
