This is an interesting place. A grand old mansion coupled with a new yoga retreat. I didn't stay at the retreat but booked a room to be in the area for the eclipse. Their are two different kinds of rooms, the mansion rooms and the carriage house rooms. The carriage house is the converted barn and these rooms are decorated in a more modern style. Carriage house rooms also include at least two basement rooms (which was what we were given) that are honestly kind of grim and gloomy. Would advise future travelers to ask for any rooms other than those in the basement. On the positive side, the shower was great and there is a beautiful common room to hang out in. I do think the owners or managers should try to hire more staff. Everyone we interacted with was wonderful but my sense is that they had to be about three places at once at all times. It was sometimes hard to find someone to ask questions/get help.

The room was not super clean. Doghair on the bed and the door was left ajar for my arrival which just felt a little odd. No television, which can be nice, but walls were thin and heard the group next door all night. The front desk was almost serve-yourself style. I was told that even though it was Saturday, there "probably wouldn't be any dinner served". and there was no breakfast, no employees in the lobby at all. Also, at a handful of times a day, the lobby was simply "closed" for a yoga session.

Very disappointed when I checked in to run the Sugarloaf Marathon and asked about getting some food at the bar. The owner/checkin clerk said, oh yes we have bar food. I went to my room cleaned up a bit and was down at the bar 30 minutes or so later. Ordered a beer and asked for a menu. No, we just closed the kitchen (this was 6 pm in the evening. The new owners purchased the hotel in the last year that they admitted to me but apparently don't know how to run a lodging business. Other things like missing soap dishes in the shower, bracket for bodywash container but no container. Bunch of little things. Be wary.

Kay, we're sorry to hear you had an experience that would warrant leaving a review like this one. When you arrived, we told you that we weren't sure whether the kitchen was serving that evening; like many folks in the service industry post-COVID, we were unexpectedly short-staffed that evening. While you were in your room, we learned from the chef that we would not be opening the kitchen for the evening due to staffing limitations. You sat down, ordered the beer, and then our bartender told you we were unable to open the kitchen. We apologized, offered to make alternative dinner recommendations or reservations for you; you pushed your beer back at the bartender angrily and stormed out without paying. Yes, we told you, with joy and pride (not admission of anything, to be sure), that we purchased the inn about a year ago. We're extremely proud of our staff and all their hard work. And we definitely know how to run a lodging business: please see so many great reviews we've received from guests in recent months! As to soap, your review hastens to mention that we had just installed new brackets in the showers, but declines to mention that we had left multiple shampoos, soaps, lotions, and otherwise in the bathroom for you. Without saying anything more direct, we met you in person and we imagine that you've had a pretty rough go. We see that you're taking it out on us here, but we firmly support our staff and their hard work. Wouldn't it be better to celebrate running a mountain marathon successfully than taking down a small business like ours over an absence of bar snacks? We'd be glad to have you join us again for a stay the next time you're in town; we'll do our absolute best to ensure that we have enough staff that evening to serve you bar snacks, The new soap dispensers have been installed in the showers, so you won't need to worry about that. We wish you many more successful marathons to come and an easy stay the next time you're in the Carrabassett Valley.

The property and the people as well as the amenities were top tier, the only aspect that I didnt particularly enjoy was how thin the walls were. I heard everything that the people next to me were talking about/doing. Granted it was listed in the site description, but the people next to me weren’t mindful of how much their voice was carrying at 6:30 am.

Small, but full of charm. Super clean rooms and bathrooms, cozy main area with fireplace and bar. Friendly and helpful staff. Close to Sugarloaf Mountain, but we would come back here, even though we don’t ski!

Such an amazing stay! Beautiful property and staff. We loved the jacuzzi and sauna after a long cold day of skiing. Great breakfast and mattresses were so comfy. We will definitely be coming back next year!

It was difficult to find anything on Sugarloaf or nearby. I booked this and we had a small cozy room in the "Barn." The bathroom was newly remodeled and nice, but small. The room was quite small and there was no TV. The decorations on the wall were quite tacky. However, check-n and the dining area were quite nice. We didn't get to dine due to other arrangements. I realize most go up that way to ski but I don't. I had to be there for a family gathering. A TV would be appreciated.

We're sorry for the inconvenience. We didn't realize your room was without a trash can; if you had told us, we would have gladly gotten one for you (I imagine it was cleaned between stays and ended up in another room). We hope to host you again in the future.

Colin, this is untrue. We did not cancel on you. You called to cancel your booking on your scheduled date of arrival and asked for a full refund or rescheduling. We declined your request and referred you to the cancellation policy. We offered to let you know if someone booked the same room, in which case we would refund you (which was in excess of our obligations under the cancellation policy.) No one booked the room, so we did not provide any refund. In the future, we encourage you to purchase travel insurance, which Expedia offers, to avoid similar situations.

We spent one awesome night there. The temp was about -10 so we didn't go outside unless it was absolutely necessary. The room was very comfortable and quiet. The bed's mattress was super comfy. The lounge was warm and receiving. This is definitely my go to Inn when I'm up in the Kingsfield area.

I'm hesitant to leave a review, because I loved it and - selfishly - I want to make sure there's vacancy next time I'm in the area. Super cool old Victorian house with a modern great room and bar. We stayed in the newly renovated barn. The rooms were clean, quiet, and comfortable and the water pressure was great. Also, the price fixe dinner was dynamite. Great place, great new owners (I think they bought it in May 2022), great proximity to Sugarloaf (~25 minutes). Highly recommended.

Great place & experience, just renovated, nice lobby & relaxation areas, good bar & couch lounge. There were a couple of issues which the owner took care of right away & proactively gave us a healthy discount - problems were very well-handled, and we look forward to staying there again.

JB and Matt are the best hosts !! They make the experience whole ! The 5 course dinner was outstanding!! The recommended wine pairing was superb!! Pros: Very kind staff. Clean, very newly remodeled property. Creakiest beds imaginable; literally had to put the mattress in the floor. The heater is a pain to use. "Free breakfast" = disappointing coffee and bagels with butter and strawberry jam only. Extremely limited food options nearby - nothing open past 9pm. Overall, I would avoid this area in the future.

Randall, thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear that you found the bed creaky; all the beds are brand new. We only wish you had told us so we either could have repaired the issue or moved you to a different room while we looked into it. When you arrived, I remember Matt telling you the same: we wish you had taken us up on the offer. We're also curious about the heater being challenging: each of our rooms has a brand new mini-split heat pump to allow guests to choose between heating and air conditioning. We wish you would have told us so we could have provided guidance in using the remote. And we're sorry to hear about your concerns with our breakfast offerings: we did notice that you joined us after the continental breakfast service had closed for the morning at 9:00 a.m., so perhaps you missed the breakfast earlier in the morning? Either way, we're sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your stay and we hope to welcome you back in the future. While restaurants in the area don't stay open late on Sunday (as in many locations), we're proud to call the Carrabassett Valley home and we hope other visitors will join us in this magical corner of Maine, too.

To be honest, we expected it to be much better than what it was. Our room look like a college dorm, with very minimal furnishings. No closet, no TV, no amenities that you would expect to have at a hotel. The bed was insanely squeaky and we had a fitful night.

Thank you for your honest feedback: we only wish you had shared it with us directly so we might have had an opportunity to make some changes to suit you. We're not certain how our newly renovated guest rooms look like college dormitories (with crystal chandeliers and Persian carpets in every room), but we'll take that feedback under advisement. We have intentionally omitted televisions from all of our guest rooms to create a more spacious, peaceful atmosphere for everyone. If other amenities were lacking, we would love to know which ones: all rooms contain customary soaps and toiletries, new hairdryers, and new furniture. For the purposes of environmental stewardship, we have not provided in-room coffee makers, but fresh coffee and tea is available in the Lounge around the clock with mugs and disposable cups alike. In our renovations, it became clear that, in order to expand the footprint of the existing bathroom from its historic small footprint, we needed to remove closets from two rooms on each floor. In each of those rooms (it sounds like yours), we installed a a wrought iron rack built for hanging clothing on our hangers, stacking shoes, and shelving for other clothing in lieu of a traditional closet. If your bed was squeaky, we would have been glad to find the source of the issue or, if it wasn't resolved, to move you to a different room.We're sorry again to hear about your experience and, in the future, we encourage you to bring those issues to your hotelier so we may be of assistance.

Zhirong, we're shocked by the content of this message. You're omitting an important detail: just hours before your arrival, you tried to cancel all but one night of your week-long stay. We referred you to our cancellation policy and indicated that the full refund you demanded was not possible. Shouting and cursing, both by phone and then in person, you told off various members of our staff. We told you in calm voices, despite your outbursts, that the cancellation policy is applicable to all guests: that's the point of a cancellation policy. You arrived angry and continued to be so for the duration of your stay. I won't respond to the specific baseless claims you're making here, but I will say this: we certainly, 100%, without question, did not discriminate against you racially. We checked you into your room on arrival; I don't know what you mean when you say that we wouldn't let you use your hotel room. Your son, with whom you traveled for a golf tournament, apologized various times to our staff about your egregious behavior. The fact that you're suggesting that our equal application of our cancellation policy to you, just as we would with any other guest, constitutes racial discrimination, is a real shock. It's manipulative and unnerving, making a suggestion like this in a public forum. Please refer to cancellation policies in advance the next time you make a booking and try to cancel it.

Skiing at Sugarloaf
Comfortable, cozy room in the addition "barn" of an old inn. Antiques galore! Upscale local bar and could include dinner if you made advance reservations. We were skiing at Sugarloaf which was about a 15-minute ride to the mountain. Both microwave and mini-frig were included in the room. The staff was awesome and we totally enjoyed our stay!
