Keutschach am See is a scenic community in a green valley surrounded by vegetation and striking rock formations. Mount Pyramidenkogel is the iconic feature towering over the region. Hike along nature trails meandering around the forests and lakes of this picturesque haven.
Bring food and drinks to the shores of Woerthersee lake for a picnic with your family and take photos of Mount Pyramidenkogel. Enjoy the southern Austrian climate, which delivers hot summers and mild winters. Take the elevator up the 330-foot-tall (100-metre) curving wooden Pyramidenkogel lookout tower for panoramic views of the lakes in the region. Alternatively, climb the stairs for some healthy exercise.
Play several rounds at the Kärntner Golfclub Dellach, which borders the southern shoreline of the Wörthersee. Get around the lake via the railway that stops at Töschling, Pörtschach, Pritschitz and other pretty towns. See highlights of the community, such as St. George Church and St. Margaret Church.
The region is mostly comprised of natural settings, such as woodland, lakes and mountains. Drive southeast to the Magic Forest Lake Rauschelesee. The woodland area includes a fairytale forest, with tree spirits, gnomes, witches and tree hobgoblins. Bring your kids to the forest’s play area and relax at the café. Stay at one of the cottages or resort hotels in communities around the lake and enjoy the serene ambiance.
Note that Keutschach am See has a rich history, with its earliest documentation in 1150. The city’s namesake noble family lived here for centuries, erecting their own castles and mansions.
The municipality lies in the glacial valley of Mount Pyramidenkogel and the Sattnitz mountain range. It is beside the Woerthersee lake and the Keutschacher See in the state of Carinthia. Fly to Klagenfurt’s small airport, 12 miles (20 kilometres) northeast, or the Salzburg Airport, 130 miles (210 kilometres) northwest. Picturesque Bled, Slovenia, is less than a 1-hour drive south.
