Enjoy a wonderful weekend away in the city of Hilversum in the centre of the Netherlands. Discover its museums, castles and the nature of the posh 'Gooi', the region this city is located in.
Hilversum is in the province of North-Holland and has a very old history. It was an independent municipality in the Gooi already at the beginning of the 15th century. It quickly grew into a sizeable town but was almost fully destroyed by fire in the 18th century. Today, it's a nice city that still has traces of its past.
One of the biggest attractions outside of Hilversum is the 13th-century castle Muiderslot and its impressive moat. The castle is a 20-minute drive to the northeast of the city. Soestdijk Palace, which is also close to the city, is an absolute must.
There's also plenty to do in Hilversum itself. For example, the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, which couldn’t be better located than in the media city itself. Another must is the Museum Hilversum, located in the city's old city hall. The museum is dedicated to local history and is the perfect place to find out more about Hilversum and its surroundings. End the day with a film at Filmtheater Hilversum. Alternate cultural activities with a day outdoors. Hilversum is very close to nature reserve Hooge Vuursche. This hilly area has a lot of woods and heath, as well as a variety of walking and horse riding paths. Explore this beautiful park so close to the city.
If you're travelling around the Netherlands by car, you can park it on the street or in a parking garage for a fee, or cheaply at the park and ride (P+R) parking lot near the train station. Hilversum is very easy to get around by bus or on foot.
If you're travelling by car, your satnav will get you to Hilversum. If you're travelling by public transport, there are frequent trains from most cities that will get you there with or without transfer.
Castles, museums and a fantastic nature reserve are waiting to be discovered in and around Hilversum. Book a city trip or a weekend away with the whole family.
