Gorinchem, which is also known as Gorkum, was granted town privileges at the end of the 14th century. Thanks to its location on the water, it quickly grew into an important trading centre. City walls were erected and at the end of the 16th century fortifications built that you can still see traces of today.
History buffs should not miss Gorinchem's only remaining city gate, the 16th-century Dalempoort. Admire the historic details and walk to the adjacent hiking areas, which are on the banks of an arm of the Merwede River.
The Gorcums Museum, which is dedicated to the history of the city, is at Grote Markt and easy to combine with a few hours of shopping.

Visit Gorinchem on both sides of the Linge River. The city is nice and compact and easy to explore on foot. Explore the surrounding area by bicycle or car if you plan to travel farther. You can park your car cheaply at the park and ride (P+R) parking lot on Stationsweg.
Gorinchem is centrally located in the Netherlands, meaning that it is easy to reach by car and public transport. The bus from Utrecht central train station gets you to Gorinchem in 45 minutes!
