Geilo is a small, intimate village in Oslo that is well known for its fantastic skiing opportunities in winter. Although the main focus is on skiing, there are several hundred kilometres of cross-country tracks and a terrain park as well, for those who like to dabble with air jumps and tricks.
The ski centre in Geilo is called Gelio Skisenter (Geilo Ski Centre) and the slopes provide ski runs on all 18 lifts. There are many different runs, so the slopes are suitable for both advanced skiers and beginners. The different runs are well marked, which shows that the resort takes safety seriously.
However, it is not only in winter that there is lots to do in Geilo. Geilolia Sommerpark (Geilolia Summer Park) ensures that life is also good in the area when the thermometer starts to soar. Go to the summer park to climb the hill, row a canoe, play around on the bungee trampoline or try your hand at rafting, to mention only a few things. Another option is to take the chairlift to Hallingskarvet Utsikten, where there are many lovely walks.
A holiday in Geilo is just the ticket for active people who enjoy being outdoors. This is reflected in the shops in the area. The majority are sports shops, leisure shops and specialty shops that focus on certain activities. Geilo is also home to well-known companies, such as Brusletto and Co. and the Geilo Hardware Factory, both of which were started in this area.
As Geilo has a train station, it’s very easy to get to this winter paradise. It is about 3.5 hours by train from Oslo, around the same if you come by train from Bergen. It is often possible to buy packages that include both the train ticket and lift pass, which can save you money.
If you like skiing or being active, Geilo is the perfect travel destination. When the sun is shining in summer, it is simply a matter of enjoying the wonderful, hilly landscape. Winter is enticing for skiing and après-ski in places such as Resepten and Skibaren. It is not without reason that Geilo is often referred to as the most fun place in Norway!
