Get to the heart of the community through the book sales and clubs in this central library. Enjoy a cup of coffee as you read.

The Columbia Public Library is a large building with a sufficiently impressive architectural design to live up to its role as the city’s home of books and other materials. The main library in the municipality is part of the larger Daniel Boone Regional Library group that includes several other libraries. Appreciate the tranquility and intriguing stylistic quirks, as you stroll through this quiet haven of books.

Notice how the building design mirrors a bookshelf. Dark bricks and curved glass wrap around the main body of the building, while a giant glass atrium towers at one side like a bookend. Inside, watch people go past from the comfort of the Perk Desk café, which serves organic fair-trade tea, coffee and other drinks. You can also purchase snacks from Lucky’s Market.

Request a tour with a docent to learn about the various book categories and architectural features. Leaf through some of the many books across the various sections and use the meeting rooms to organize your own book club events.

The library is a gathering point and central beacon of the community. Attend one of the myriad events that take place here, from job center hiring events and computer workshops to book sales and children’s programs. On the second floor, citizens can apply for a U.S. passport. The walk-in system means you do not need to book in advance.

The library opens Sunday afternoons and Monday to Saturday from morning to evening. It is free to enter. If you live in Boone or Callaway County, apply for a library card online or at the site.

Find the Columbia Public Library between the districts of North Central Columbia and Quarry Heights in the center of Columbia. From the University of Missouri, walk northwest for about 20 minutes to get here. Consider driving and leaving your car in the large parking lot on the southern side of the building.

While here, explore the area for other nearby highlights such as John A. Stewart Park, Flat Branch Park and Grasslands Park.
