Cruz Bay Travel Guide

U.S. Virgin Islands
Cruz Bay showing a bay or harbour and a beach
Experience the fun, carefree atmosphere that surrounds this charming town on the west coast of St. John.

Sit in one of the waterfront bars at Cruz Bay and sip on a rum cocktail while you watch yachts from all over the world arrive at the harbour. Browse the quirky wares for sale in independent stores in the heart of town or relax on a nearby beach.

The main town on St. John is usually abuzz with activity although the pace of life is slow and the locals are warm and welcoming. Order a refreshing drink at one of the bars by the pier and while away several hours enjoying the sun and chatting with the bartenders.

Stretch your legs and walk to the shops at Mongoose Junction. Buy locally made clothes and jewellery from some of the finest brands in the Virgin Islands, pick up souvenirs and gifts and survey works from local artists in galleries.

Stop at the Cruz Bay Visitor Centre during your stay. Around two-thirds of St. John is covered by the Virgin Islands National Park the visitor centre is the place to get local information and maps about the protected area. Book diving, kayaking and walking trips or find out what wildlife you can expect to encounter when you are out and about.

If you’d prefer something a little more sedate, head for the soft sands of Hawksnest Bay, a 6-minute taxi ride east of town. Sunbathe in peace or dive into the tepid turquoise sea and explore the bright coral reef just offshore.

As dinnertime nears, make your way back to the waterfront part of Cruz Bay where some of the finest restaurants are located. Try succulent fish cooked in fiery spices or a juicy burger and fries.

St. John does not have an airport. To get here, take the ferry to Cruz Bay from St. Thomas. One of the best times to visit is between April and June when the weather is pleasant and crowds are relatively thin, however, you can expect warm weather at any time of the year.
