Just what we needed to have a GREAT VACATION!!!
-The room looked just like the pics. When we arrived to our Jr. Suite our room was clean, fridge cold and so was the A/C! Huge shower with two sinks. Plenty of counter space and a little shelf for all your toiletries, etc. Which was a big plus when u have girls sharing a bathroom. The bed was comfy. I really liked the fact that beside the bed was a little shelf and it had light switches. -One of the great things about the rooms here is that you could not hear the other guests. Our room was close to all conveniences of the hotel (pool, restaurant, reception and exit). -Breakfast had a number of buffet options. I LOVED the banana pancakes! The pool was perfect for when the beach was a bit too sunny. It was clean & nicely decorated. -The rooms were cleaned everyday and they always did a fantastic job. Sometimes there were insects around or in the room. Its the carribean, you have to expect bugs. -Big Plus for the hotel having a security guard patrolling every night around seven pm or so. Plus, they close the gate around nine pm so only the guard can let you in. This was great! -They were ALL more than willing to offer directions, call you a taxi or answer any other questions you may have. I liked the fact that they werent constantly in your face. They were there when we needed them. Of all the staff, the Italian Manager was our favorite. He was very helpful & went above & beyond to make sure we enjoyed our stay. THANK YOU & we cant wait to return to Totem Hotel

Affordable & good location.
My wife & I stayed two nights with another couple that were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. We enjoyed each day at nearby attractions and enjoyed the nightlife at a town about 1 mile north.

Nice hotel in front of the Cocles beach
It was the only hotel with AC in the area, we were happy about the staff service and the accomodation ( furniture in bamboo, hot water). We did not use the swimming pool and the jacuzzi as we prefered to go directly to the beach. The breakfast was a buffet with eggs, gallo pinto (local speciality made of rice and beans) pancakes and cakes. Staff was helpful.

This hotel is in a great location, positioned right across the street from a wonderful beach in Puerto Viejo. The hotel itself is ok. It could use some upkeep as the grounds are pretty overgrown and the rooms just so-so. It does have a restaurant, which is convenient because it is over a mile from town. But, I wouldn't rave about the food there or the service of either. The main problem for me was that the hotel leaves bright lights on all night long in the courtyards and they stream into your bedroom so it is hard to sleep. The rooms are typical for CR and do not afford very comfortable beds or much luxury. So, for the price, it just depends on what you are looking for. I think there may be better options in town that are also close to a beach. And previous ratings of this hotel may have been from a time when the hotel had more to offer than just location.

Great Getaway
Hotel was amazing and gorgeous, not so far where the actual town is. it's a great get away staff treats you great!! Also it is literally right in front of the beach, hearing the ocean waves at night and early Morning is so soothing. You can rent a bike, learn to surf (I did not do since I traveled with a 7yr old by myself) and they can call up recreation you'll like , which I went snorkeling and hiking in Cahuita, I highly recommend!!

Very hard to work with and rude staff
The staff was rude and very difficult to work with. We stayed in Costa Rica for 12 nights and made 8 different hotels we had reserved every single one of them besides the Totem Beach Resort was very accommodating. Choosing the Totem Beach Resort was by far the worst experience we had in Costa Rica.

Good value good location for exploring Costa Rica
Great value well run across from the beach. It is not luxury but very nice for the price and they are very helpful om anything you could request. They helped us set up a fabulous set of fun excursions and the zipline was the best for sure. There are no mega hotels down in this neck of the woods so they are all family units but we had AC and nice size suite and all was good. This is not the hotel for silence and sleeping in it is a base for exploration. we loved it.

Ok but a bit rustic
Maybe is was because we just came from a m uch higher end and brighly decorated resort just down the road, but the Totem appeared comparatively dark and dingie. But it was right accrosss the street from a bueatiful and popular beach and the staff was very nice.

Great vacation!
My friend and I stayed in a suite, it was right at the pool and closest to the ocean. Great room and location. Breakfast was nice every morning, a good variety. We would walk into town, which would be about 20 minutes or so, but you could rent a bike or a taxi too. We preferred the aspect of being off the beaten path than rushing back into town.

Totem Hotel is for Every Traveler to Costa Rica
It was a fabulous hotel, by my standards. The Totem Beach Resort was in the jungle, on the beach, and had hot water and air conditioning. The entire site is non-smoking except for a small area outside the restaurant/bar. There was a small Jacuzzi pool and lots of hammocks amid the lush, tropical foliage. The landscaping was perfect. And the brakfast that is included is beyond compare. Pastries and warm entrees, juices, fruits... very ample and pleasing.

GREAT VALUE AND AMBIANCE
Charming little boutique hotel with lush tropical landscaping, friendly staff, excellent location. All the amenities worked well, including AC and Wi-Fi. Nice Italian restaurant below, but I didn't go to Costa Rica to eat Italian food!Breakfast included with room rate was excellent and substantial.

Totem Hotel in Costa Rica
Across the street for easy access to the beach. Pool, hottub and breakfast included. Qut of town so it is a little less traveled which is a plus for us.

Nice place, close to town
Nice place to stay. When we arrived we had flowers all around the room. Our room was set right off the swimming pool and we could hear the fountain during the day and the waves at night. Our room was very clean and brightly colored. We had three beds, a refrigerator and hot water! We arranged tours through the hotel and had a fabulous time! Everyday and every night we walked into town which was about 3/4 mile. Would advice bringing a flashlight to walk at night as there are a few areas where it was dark and the cars drive pretty fast. The receptionist told us that it wasn't safe to walk at night, as people can take advantage of tourists. We felt safe even with our child in a stroller. We rented bikes and road all the way to Manzanillo and had a blast! The only negatives to this hotel were that the jacuzzi was cold and the food at the restaurant wasn't great. Seven days of the same breakfast got old, if we had more money to spend we would've gone somewhere else to eat. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Would stay there again!

Puerto Viejo Hotel
The pros are: Totem Hotel is a very nice hotel where i stayed for 6 nights solo. I stayed in the suite right in front of the pool, and it was spacious and modern, especially the bathroom. Staff were very accommodating and the delicious complementary buffet breakfast consisted of local fresh fruit, eggs and surprise treats daily. I checked out several different accommodations in the area, and although you will be offered cheaper prices, you will be confronted with bugs, insects, no a/c and inadequate hot water. This hotel is in a great location as it is less than 40 feet from Cocles beach, and if you are open to bicycling around, you can check out beautiful beaches nearby: Uma and Ciciela. Puerto Viejo is a party town so if you want to do that, there is plenty of opportunity. The cons is that this hotel lacked blankets, and clean beach towels and wash cloths. The other con is that its unsafe to walk outside of the hotel after dark--its unlighted and the nearby town is dubious. Must take a taxi. But for me, it was very relaxing, and an excellent location for hiking, beaching n checking out Jaguar Rescue Center!

This was our first hotel in our 9 day tour of Costa Rica. And what af irst hotel it was. Let me be clear, this is by nomeans a traditional 5 star hotel. I'm giving it a solid 4 stars for the following reasons 1. They offer great day trips for a steal 2. You can literally throw a rock and hit the beach 3. About 1km from town 4. Hot water, trust me, not all hotels I stayed at had it 5. Stray dogs. I don't have a problem with them. In fact I temporarily adopted one who sat next to me at dinner and slept outside our room. But be forewarned...a lot of large, stray dogs around the entire town and on the beach. 6. They have a jaccuzi, but it's not hot. It would have been nice to ease that old muscles after a strenuous hike 7. Doors automatically lock, and there is noknob. As silly as it sounds, it's very VERY easy to get locked out of your room. Took me about 5 seconds. 8. Safe in room and a nice cold A/C. 9. I had weird curtains that don't close all the way in my sleeping room. Bad thing was I was on the walkway side of the building. Luckily there weren't many guests when we went in late September. 10. Resaurant leaves a lot to be desired. In my opinion, of course, the food here was mediocre. Everything just seemed to be covered in cheese. Their Foccacia bread is pretty delicious though. Overall, this hotel is a wonderful place to stay for a few days. It was very nice hearing the ocean every night and howler monkies in the morning. If you have time, I would highly recommend both the Bribri indigenous tribe/chocolate house tour as well as the Jaguar rescue. Both were wonderful trips and very reasonabley priced.

Great hotel
Totem has proven to be a wonderful hotel, much better than more expensive hotels we stayed at in Costa Rica. We had a suite with ocean view (ocean is 20 meters away, across the road). Had some problems with first room (shower drain was clogged up, AC quit in the middle of the night after 1 day), but we were offered another suite with no problems. Very friendly personnel, great location, overall would recommend this to everyone.

The room we booked was pretty small and it didn't have a fridge so we move to a suite. It had air conditioning, tv, fridge and two rooms. Not sure about the pricing of it though. Didn't really sit down and do the math. But they did charge us more for when friends came over and ended up sleeping in the 2 extra beds we had. I was pretty annoyed but again I haven't taken the time to do the math its possible they were not charging us the full rate for such a suite. The internet only works in the lobby!

Grazioso albergo in ristrutturazione
Quando siamo arrivati nell'albergo abbiamo trovato qualche piccolo lavoro, dovuto al fatto che l'albergo era da poco accorpato all'altro resort Cariblue. Inoltre c'era cattivo odore nei bagni. A parte questo l'albergo è carino e la posizione di fronte al mare molto piacevole. Il ristorante è esteticamente molto bello, ma la qualità del cibo sotto le aspettative.

Ottimo hotel per una vacanza speciale
Abbiamo soggiornato in questo ottimo hotel di fronte al mare, in una stanza spaziosa a due passi dal ristorante e lo suggeriamo a chi deve recarsi in questa zona. L'albergo è gestito da italiani ed è ideale per chi vuole dedicarsi al surf.

Wir hatten über Expedia 2 Superior-Suiten mit Balkon inclusive Meerblick gebucht. Nach dem Einzug stellten wir fest, dass unsere Zimmer lediglich Terrassen hatten und man direkt am kleinen aber netten Pool war. Nach einer kleinen Anfrage an der Rezeption stellte sich heraus, dass unsere Zimmer mit Abstand die schönsten im ganzen Objekt waren, da sie kürzlich frisch renoviert und geschmackvoll modernisiert worden sind. Ein Blick in eines der "älteren" Zimmer bestätigte diese Aussage und so verzichteten wir gern auf den Balkon mit Meerblick, welcher eh nur durch die am Straßenrand befindlichen Wedel der Palmen möglich gewesen wäre. Das ans Hotel angeschlossene italienische Restaurant bereitet auch das Frühstück zu. Leider ist das Personal ab einem Andrang von mehr als 6 Gästen ziemlich überfordert, so dass ständig etwas, von dem eh schon sehr übersichtlichen Angebot, fehlt. Das Abendessen in der Lokalität war ein Reinfall, da die bestellte Pizza eher für amerikanische Konsumenten ausgelegt war. Salate und Kaffee hingegen waren ausgesprochen schmackhaft. Cocktails gibt es im Hotel leider keine, dafür sind wir dann an die Bar eines Nachbarhotels gegangen (kein Rum vorhanden, Kaipy mit Vodka gemixt, trotzdem lecker). Insgesamt haben wir in diesem Hotel ein paar schöne Tage mit relaxen zugebracht, bevor wir weiter ins Landesinnere gereist sind.

El area de comida fue la unica parte que no fue de mi agrado, el desayuno no llamo mucho la atencion y no tenia ningun valor agregado el desayunar en el lugar. el Jacuzzi es a "temperatura ambiente" no se a que venia esa descripcion porque la temperatura del jacuzzi fue fria no importa si era medio dia o 6 pm, tal vez temperarlo un poco para poderle sacar provecho seria una buena mejora. El staff del Hotel muy bueno!

En resumen por lo que pagas tienes una habitacion con colchon de muelles que se clavan, ducha sin presion y sin television. El barcelo san jose me costo lo mismo y con desayuno incluido. Ojo con el desayuno, si lo reservas por internet es mas caro que luego alli (7$), y aun asi es mejor desayunar en algun sitio de puerto viejo. Engatusan con la piscina y el jacuzzi y no hay quien las utilice. Lo mejor la mesa de ping-pong de recepcion. Sin duda no repetiria ni se lo recomendaria a nadie, hay mejores opciones por la zona y mas baratas. Lo unico bueno el servicio, eran amables y competentes.

Buen lugar, en un buen lugar
A km y medio de Puerto Viejo, al lado de Playa Cocles, que es muy buena y bonita. Un buen sitio, muy limpio, gente muy maja, lo unico que podía tener de más era una tele en la habitación, ya que anochece a las 18h y la tarde se puede hacer larga, pero tiene piscina, jacuzzi... y esos monos aulladores que te despiertan al amanecer. La gente de recepción muy maja, el restaurante de la entrada está muy bien, sin ser nada caro, tipo italiano. Organizan todo tipo de excursiones. La unica pega es que está a 20minutos del pueblo, pero el paseo es agradable (aunque por carretera). Por cierto, si dudas entre estar alojado en Cahuita, Puerto Viejo o Manzanillo no lo dudes, Puerto Viejo les da mil vueltas. Y cocles está muy cerquita. Totalmente recomendable.

muy buen hotel y a buen precio. el personal muy amable, cuidando cada detalle. muy bien decorado. me gustó las hamacas en la entrada de cada habitación. lástima que no podíamos quedarnos otro día. la playa, enfrente. los desayunos muy bien y la chica de centralita,Olga, muy atenta. en general, perfecto.

Fantastiskt på alla sätt
ALLT var bra på Totem! Bodde 5 dagar i rum 2 med den underbara lilla poolen precis utanför. Tvärsöver vägen ligger stranden - ibland med röd flagg. Då går man till hotellet bredvid och hyr en cykel och cyklar några kilometer till en lugnare strand. Restaurangen på Totem är en av de bästa på karibiska kusten. Maten lagas av den italienske ägarens son, en mycket sympatisk ung man, (kockutbildad i Europa) som dessutom är en utmärkt bartender och blandade till den bästa Caipiroska jag druckit. Puerto Viejo ligger bara några km och några colones med taxi därifrån.
