Arrived, waited almost half an hour for reception service, received my room key. Upon arrival to my room, which was dirty, I noticed the air conditioner not working. After a service person attended and advised the unit could not be repaired at the time, I returned to reception requesting a change of room. The reception attendants response was "so the thing is, the manager isn't here so you'll just have to put up with it, come to reception tomorrow and only then we'll be able to tell you what we can do for you". Upon insisting to speak to the manager, the manager arrived at reception from the back office (the person at reception had lied to me). I was told that the hostel was booked out, its sister hostel booked out, that there were no fans and no options for me. I was then told I would be able to request a refund but it was unclear how long that would take. I packed my room and returned to reception to perform check out and receive my refund. The manager had left, the girl at reception only agreed to return the balance of my booking (and not Expedia's fees). When I explained to her that in Australia one cannot provide a "three quarters refund", the person at the front desk tried to explain to me that in fact it was slightly more than three quarters of the full amount. After a further argument, my fee was refunded, in three transactions. I ended up having to go 30KM to find accommodation, paid double and seriously tainted my holidays.
