A holiday on Bornholm offers many experiences that you cannot find anywhere else. The natural surroundings are different here than in the rest of Denmark, so take some time to participate in outdoor activities. You will also find interesting buildings and fascinating history that you should not miss out on when you are holidaying here.
In Bornholm you can find four of Denmark's seven preserved round churches from the Middle Ages. Østerlars Round Church in Gudhjem is also Bornholm's biggest and oldest building from around 1150 and the frescos in the church are from about 1350. You will be able to experience the exciting architecture and history, as well as the beautiful nature that surrounds the church.
Bornholm's unique nature is due to its island location in the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Poland. The north side of the island is the only location in Denmark where you can see the beautiful granite cliffs. Here on the northern tip of Bornholm, on one of the cliffs pointing up out of the sea, is Hammerknuden. At the top you can experience the largest castle ruins in northern Europe, Hammershus Castle Ruins, dating from the 11th century, which are the remains of a real medieval fortress.
In the middle of Bornholm is one of Denmark's biggest forests, Almindingen, which also has several attractions. On your trip to the forest you will pass old forts and Rokkestenen (Rocking Stone) which weighs seven tonnes and the large valley Ekkodalen (Echo valley), which is also the highest point in Bornholm. Try shouting and see if the valley lives up to its name.
In Bornholm's many small towns you will find shops with everything you need for your holiday, as well as many locally produced items that you can bring home. Bornholm's selection of restaurants are spread across the island and you should not miss out on the island's speciality: smoked herring. You can sail directly to Bornholm from Køge or drive to Sweden and sail to Ystad. You can easily get around the island both by bus and car, but many people hire bicycles in order to experience the countryside as well.
You will definitely have many unique memories to bring home from your holiday on Bornholm. This exciting island has to be experienced, so that you can feel the special atmosphere for yourself.
