This is not a "resort" type experience. This is more a natural luxury. The staff is wonderful, the food fantastic, the activities refreshing. Try the Medicinal Plant walk, ask for Amilcar (ahhhmeelcaar) and we also highly recommend the trip to Lamanai. The only issues one might have would be the roads. An hour plus in and out and to anywhere over pot hole filled roads that put those in Metro Detroit to shame. I have a bad neck and was able to withstand them but someone with a serious back or neck issue may want to choose another adventure. Let's hope the government gets busy and repairs them because everyone should try this place at least once!
Cell service is only from 6-8 am by the mineral bath, but no worries the staff has local service for emergencies. Internet works in the restaurant area. No cable or phones in the rooms. If you truly want to unplug, safely lol, this is the place.
I had caught a cold that hit me pretty hard on the third day. Amilcar made me a couple of teas from plants and barks that we had seen on the walk that fixed me right up!
The hotel is in mid city of Belize which is close to eating places, taxi, bus and walking distance to the main streets. THe employees are corteous, friendly, and helpful with whatever you need. THe room was nice, clean and the maid service was lovely. I would recommend this hotel to a friend for sure.
We were very concerned about our stay here due to some unsavoury reviews, but my wife and I were very pleasantly surprised:
Our room was not only clean, but smelled clean and breakfast was a delight. We had a great view from our room and the staff was all in all very good.
Our stay at the Great House was tremendous. It was like a little bit of paradise in the midst of some awful poverty. I thought Belize City was like the Travel Channel, but it fell far short. The hotel staff was wonderful and very helpful. The morning and evening staff both took time to give us recommendations for restaurants and shopping. It did not have a pool, but for a small price you could use the Radisson's pool. We just never did. The breakfast was pastries from the bakery next door. They were delicious and there was usually enough to make an evening snack. The biggest shortfall, and we knew this going in, our room was on the third floor and there was no elevator. If you stay here, try to get a room on the second floor or be prepared. There was security and adequate parking. I would recommend highly this hotel just because of the staff.
Had a great 5 day stay with our family. Perfect location, but everything is close on Caye Caulker. The pool is a great place to hang out and cool off (with the bar close-by)- the small private dock is a relaxing spot too. So many great things to do in Belize, and Josue was the best. He is a helpful, friendly, and responsive manager in the office, but most of all he was excellent in setting up all our tours during our stay. I e-mailed him a week before our arrival, and he had everything organized and set-up for us when we got there. We will be coming back!
I have stayed here before and the hotel was as good as ever. The staff is very friendly. The hotel overall is getting older, but we had no issues at all and has been kept current. The three restaurants on the property are excellent and fit whatever mood you are looking for. There are hotel personnel in the parking area to insure your rental is safe and secure. There is an excellent workout facility on the property, better than most in the states and definitely better than you would expect overseas. There is an on property adventure coordination office that can help you better experience what this beautiful country has to offer. If you have never been to Belize I would highly recommend using this because unfortunately there is not much in the local area to see, but that is not related to the actual Hotel. The hotel is a little on the high end of the price spectrum, but in my opinion it is well worth it. I would and have recommended this property to friends and family that are interested in staying in Belize City.
