Stylish cottage with stunning vista
The cottage is appointed to a very high standard and well equipped for all your needs. It is situated just a few miles from the lovely market town of Alston and has stunning views across the valley. This was our first visit to the North Pennines area and we loved it. The area is much less busy than the Lakes but is just as pretty with lots of good walks around. Many thanks to Gareth and Amanda for making our stay so enjoyable.

Fabulous!!
There should really be a bonus star that we can award! We enjoyed our stay so, so much. From the moment we arrived, with such a warm welcome, to the moment we left, with heavy hearts and a tear in the eye. Amanda & Gareth were the perfect hosts. Nothing was too much for them, but they allowed us plenty of privacy too. We enjoyed their company immensely though, so were happy to have long chats. The fact they shared their beautiful dogs with us only increased our enjoyment. We'll miss them all. The barn is a delight - well presented and with everything you could need - very comfortable. The location is amazing - far reaching, magnificent, pastoral views. It's a beautiful area with lovely towns and lots of historical interest. You could not do better than choose Owl Retreat for a comfortable and relaxing holiday. Many, many thanks to Amanda, Gareth, Pip and Lottie for a wonderful week. Paul & Martin.

Excellent stay
Very comfortable accommodation, well equipped with everything we needed for self catering. Fantastic views from the patio, great place to sit with a glass of wine at the end of the day. Excellent walking nearby. Can thoroughly recommend and would definitely stay here again.

Anniversary getaway
A lovely place to unwind and relax, location is beautiful. The cottage was too. Very cozy, had everything we needed. The night sky when clear is spectacular. Would recommend this place. Owners are lovely too.

An outstanding stay
We had an outstanding stay in Owl Retreat, Watergreens Farm. the cottage has been very tastefully done, is well equipped and was spotlessly clean. It was beautifully quiet and peaceful, facing the hills. The views were wonderful and in the very good weather we were even able to have a drink outside before dinner on a couple of evenings, which we don't expect to do in September! Amanda the owner was extremely helpful and very prompt in all her responses.

Great location ,excellent views and only 5 minutes drive from the nearest town. Spacious cottage with every thing you might need. Only one thing to improve and that is a bigger tv.

Well appointed holiday accommodation with great views
Amanda met us and showed us around the property and gave great suggestions for local walks, restaurants etc. Owl Retreat is spacious and has all you need for a comfortable stay with well appointed kitchen and bathroom, comfortable furniture and bed and great views as shown in the pictures. We greatly enjoyed our week there and would happily return.

Absolutely lovely stay, gorgeous property on gorgeous surroundings. The standard of the property is extremely high and luxurious and perfect for a couple's getaway. The hosts Amanda and Gareth are really nice and so helpful and welcoming! We will definitely be staying again!

Perfect mini break
The cottage was perfect for our 4 night stay. It is easy to find and a very short drive from Alston, surrounded by stunning scenery and was a great base for exploring both Northumbria and Cumbria. The accommodation was spotlessly clean, well equipped, very cosy and comfortable and we could not fault it in any way. We were reassured by the measures taken re covid and communication with Amanda was excellent. We came away feeling really refreshed after such a lovely break and would definitely return in the future.

Beautiful welcoming cottage
On arrival at this accommodation we were wowed with the thoughtfulness of the hosts with all the personal touches including a chilled bottle of wine. The accommodation was exceptionally clean and the views from the door were stunning. Amanda and Gareth had great local knowledge and really helped us plan some beautiful walks. We could have easily stayed longer - highly recommended

Simply amazing, perfect property and location
Amazing property, beautiful inside and out. Warm, great facilities and spotlessly clean. Lovely welcome and great advice about the area. Location is perfect, close enough to near by villages for walking to (or quick drive): for great food but far enough that you feel out in the county. And the views from the house are amazing

Very spacious, clean and well appointed accommodation
Very spacious, clean and well appointed accommodation situated in beautiful surroundings just up the road from Alston and 30 minutes drive from Hadrian's Wall. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone wishing to visit the area.

Owl Retreat
This is a lovely place to stay. Owl Retreat was very comfortable and quiet. It has such beautiful views across lovely countryside and many interesting walks and places to go without travelling too far. We were sorry that the weather did not allow us to use the lovely outside space or see the lovely sunsets that Amanda told us about. She was so friendly and added a lovely personal touch to a great stay. Thank you.

A very comfortable, attractive compact converted barn in a stunning location. The accommodation was extremely well equipped and furnished, with much attention to detail, and very cosy. The information provided on local places of interest was extensive, and the owners very welcoming and helpful.

A relaxing five nights break
A quiet location, amazing views. Property tastefully decorated with good quality furniture and fittings. Kitchen very well equipped: cooker; microwave; dishwasher; washer/dryer and fridge/freezer, cleaning products provided. A file provided with instructions for equipment and heating / hot water. Bathroom has jacuzzi bath and separate shower. Bedroom had plenty of storage space Plenty of information leaflets about places of interest locally, places to eat and walks.

Quiet with a beautiful view
The cottage at Watergreens Farm was clean, comfortable, and spacious. Amanda was very welcoming and responsive, even lending us binoculars when we expressed an interest in identifying the birds on the walk along the river. During our short stay we visited Hadrian's Wall and Durham; both were wonderful experiences.

We really enjoyed our stay at owl retreat. We had a lovely warm welcome and the cookies were very nice! The bottle of prosecco for steves birthday was a really nice touch. Lots of lovely scenery and the retreat is perfect, in a lovely quiet spot where you can relax. The spa bath was amazing. We would love to visit again!

Watergreens farm stay in Alston was a lovely experience
Watergreens farm is is a lovely setting .We we’re only able to stay for one night unfortunately and didn’t arrive until very very late due to traffic problems, but Amanda stayed up to welcome us with a bottle of wine and homemade biscuits. The accommodation was larger than expected , modern kitchen appliances, comfortable bed and great bathroom with a whirlpool bath which was very welcome. Thank you to a great host and we hope to return sometime.

This was the perfect place to stay and relax. Fabulous location, wonderful views.
The property is immaculate and well equipped. We immediately felt at home there. It was in the perfect location to base ourselves for sightseeing. We took trips out each day. There was many suggestions of things to do from our hosts. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely consider returning.

Amazing place for a 'Get away from it all break' Superb accommodation, lovely friendly hosts, and stunning landscape. What more could you ask for. The only thing I didnt enjoy was the very wiggly road to get to Alston...I'm terrified of sheer drops on roads...but thats just me! Will definitely be coming back. Thank you. 😍

We absolutely loved our stay at owl retreat. Amanda greeted us and gave us a tour and told us all the best places to go. We went into the town on her recommendation and really enjoyed it. Picturesque winter wonderland
Couldn't rate this place any higher. Remote, with stunning views and within a short drive to Alston. The Owl Retreat was simply stunning. I never wanted to get out of the spa bath. The attention to detail is wonderful. Would definitely recommend and will definitely be returning in the summer!

Alston is such a beautiful place..highly recommend a visit to The Angel pub which serves lovely home comfort style food...very friendly locals. Amanda and Gareth were fantastic hosts who added a personal touch to help us celebrate our anniversary. Cottage is stunning, equipped with everything you need. looking forward to a longer stay soon x

Lovely comfortable cottage/ barn conversion . Tea ,coffee ,milk thoughtfully provided.The owners are very accommodating and there if you need them or need anything . Beautiful countryside ,fab for birdwatching / wildlife. . Would deffinatly go back.

Amazing short stay....wish we could have stayed longer
We were met at the cottage by Gareth who gave us a guided tour of their lovely cottage, which had all the mod cons you could expect, even had a docking station to play my ipod. Told us the best places to eat and drink, locally and further afield. Could not have been more helpful. On the first night we walked along the river to the pub (lovely walk) and walked back in the dark along the road guided by a head torch lent to us by Gareth (nice touch!!). We actually met Gareth and Amanda at the pub (not on purpose!) and they volunteered to pick us up later after they had dropped off their friends. Brilliant walking all around and particularly enjoyed the walk from Garrigill village (couple of miles from the cottage) to Ashgill Force, make sure you walk over the moors from the village not just up the road!!!. We didn't see a soul on the whole walk and alone at the waterfalls. Take some lunch its a great spot. Could not fault the cottage or its owners you have a great product at a great price. Owl Retreat has everything you could possibly need! The kitchen is well equipped and lounge area is very comfy and cosy. The spa bath is wonderful and bed was firm and very comfortable! Amamda was a wonderful host! Would love to return some time.

Owl's Retreat Alston great!
Modern clean spacious, excellent location and outlook. Great base to explore Hadrians Wall and roman ruins. The little towns and villages are also a delight to explore. The property iswell set up with everything you could require. Amanda was a cnarming and helpful host. We should have stayed longer.

A very, very nice cottage
We really could not fault the accommodation; it was clean, comfortable and quiet. Perfect for our holiday in Cumbria. We were made to feel welcome but equally given our privacy - which was a lovely balance to achieve. Our thanks to Gareth and Amanda. Just a shame the weather didn't match the cottage!

Absolutely fantastic!
This was worth the stay and if I had known it would have been this amazing then I would have booked few days more. The owners are welcoming people with amazing hospitality and they explain everything to you and leave you to it but are there when you need them. The cottage was so comfortable and relaxing and felt like home and really enjoyed the views and walks. Will be visiting again as it's worth the money. Thank you Gareth and Amanda for letting us stay.
