What you can expect

Your day begins with a convenient pick-up from your Zhangye hotel by our professional guide and driver, get ready to immerse yourself in history. We’ll head southeast first, covering approximately 65 kilometres of scenic roads that gradually transition from the city’s bustle to the rugged charm of the Qilian Mountains’ foothills, until we reach our first stop: the Mati Temple Grottoes.
Dating back to the 5th century, these grottoes are a living testament to ancient Buddhist culture, far more than just stone and paint. As you step into the complex, you’ll first notice the way the grottoes are carved into the mountain’s face—an impressive feat of ancient craftsmanship. Walk through the interconnected caves, and you’ll discover a wealth of details: weathered but still expressive stone Buddha statues, faded yet intricate frescoes that depict scenes from Buddhist sutras, and narrow stone corridors that once echoed with the chants of monks. What makes Mati Temple truly unique is its history as an early crossroads of Buddhist exchange: Chinese and Tibetan monks once studied and practised here side by side, and it served as a key hub for foreign monks spreading Buddhist teachings along the Silk Road. You’ll also sense its dual role in ancient times—not just a sacred altar for believers seeking enlightenment, but also a quiet sanctuary where tired Silk Road traders paused to rest and pray before continuing their journeys.
Afterwards, we’ll return drive towards Zhangye city. When you feel ready for lunch, our guide will share recommendations for local restaurants that suit your preferences. Please note that lunch expenses are at your own cost, and the guide will be happy to help you navigate menus or make reservations if needed.
Once you’re refreshed, we’ll head to our second highlight: Giant Buddha Temple, a masterpiece of architecture and art from the Western Xia Dynasty, first built in 1098. The moment you enter the temple complex, you’ll be struck by its grandeur—especially the imposing Main Hall, with its high eaves and traditional Chinese roof tiles that have stood the test of time for over 900 years. Step inside the hall, and your eyes will immediately be drawn to the star attraction: a colossal reclining Buddha statue, measuring over 34 metres long, that has rested here peacefully for centuries. The statue is preserved with remarkable care—you can still see the intricate details of its robes, the gentle expression on its face, and the gold leaf accents that catch the light. Surrounding the Buddha are more stone carvings and vibrant wall paintings, each telling a storey of ancient faith and artistry. Take your time to wander the hall, admire the craftsmanship, and soak in the calm, spiritual atmosphere before we conclude the tour.
Finally, our driver will take you back to your Zhangye hotel, bringing this day of exploring ancient history, Buddhist heritage, and cultural charm to a peaceful end.
