Activity itinerary

Step inside a historic Hanko atelier in Kamakura and meet a fourth-generation Japanese seal engraver from a family tradition dating back to 1898. This premium cultural experience goes beyond a typical craft workshop. Discover the history and meaning of Hanko in Japanese life, see traditional engraving tools, and view works created by highly skilled craftsmen. Your host holds Japan’s First-Grade National Trade Skill Certification in seal engraving and continues the techniques and spirit passed down through four generations. You will also experience the craft yourself by carving a stone seal under the guidance of the master, giving you a first-hand understanding of the precision required in traditional seal engraving. Then discuss the design of your own personalised Hanko with the craftsman. Rather than simply carving letters, the master considers the balance, shape and character of the design before carefully creating your personal seal. It is an opportunity not only to make something, but to meet the craftsman, understand the culture and take home a piece created especially for you in Kamakura.
