Discover Indonesia through its coffee in a small-group, hands-on experience at Toko Kopi Kulon, a local coffee house in Bantul, just outside Yogyakarta.
This is more than a coffee tasting. It is a journey from bean to cup, where you can smell, taste, compare, learn and finally brew your own coffee with a passionate local barista.
Start by exploring Indonesian coffee from more than 50 origins across the archipelago, including Gayo, Java, Toraja, Ijen and Temanggung. Discover how geography, coffee variety and processing can create completely different aromas and flavours.
You’ll also discover all four coffee species found in Indonesia: Arabica, Robusta, Liberica and the rarer Excelsa.
Learn about one of Indonesia’s most famous coffees, Sumatran Luwak Coffee, and hear the storey behind its unique production and reputation.
Then make the experience truly sensory. Open the coffee jars with your host, smell the aromas, taste raw beans and compare different processing methods such as natural, honey, full-wash and wine process.
Along the way, explore raw Indonesian cacao beans and taste a selection of single-origin chocolates. Chocolate is a delicious complement to the coffee journey, giving you another way to experience the flavours of Indonesia.
Next comes the fun part: the coffee cupping challenge.
Taste five coffees selected from the origins you explored and put your senses to the test. Look for fruity, floral, earthy, nutty or chocolatey characteristics and see how accurately you can identify them. When travelling with friends or family, compete for the sharpest palate and a special prize judged by your barista.
After the cupping, choose your favourite coffee and brew your own V60 pour-over. Your local barista will guide you step by step and show you how grind size, pouring technique and brewing affect the final cup.
Along the way, hear stories about Indonesian coffee culture, from the history of Java Coffee during the Dutch East Indies period to the local tradition of “ngopi” and today’s growing café culture.
You do not need previous coffee knowledge to enjoy this experience. It is designed for curious travellers, food lovers, coffee enthusiasts and complete beginners alike.
Your experience is also captured with photos and short videos, which will be sent to you free of charge after the session.
Before you leave, choose two 50g portions of Indonesian coffee or chocolate to take home as a tasty reminder of your time in Yogyakarta.
With a maximum of 5 participants, the experience stays personal, relaxed and hands-on from start to finish.
Hotel pickup and drop-off are available with selected options.
