Begin with a pickup from your hotel. Head to the Yogyakarta Palace, which houses numerous museums with antiques, historical artefacts, and valuable items. Although the palace is no longer occupied by the king, it remains a prime destination for educational tourism.
Learn about the history of the Mataram kingdom and the reign of a king who is also the governor of the province. Next, visit Taman Sari, or Water Castle, built by the first king of Yogyakarta as the first recreational area ever.
Then, get to know several cultures or traditions that are preserved until now, namely the culture of making, painting, producing, and marketing batik. Batik is a beautiful ornament made on cloth and used as material for clothing, paintings, and various attributes.
Besides getting to know the batik culture, this tour will also introduce you to one of Javanese cultural heritages, the making of traditional weapons called keris, which are weapons made from iron metal using traditional manufacturing methods.
Next, visit a shadow puppet-making workshop. Shadow puppets are one of the world's cultural heritages that are also recognised by UNESCO. These shadow puppets are made from buffalo or cow hide that has been flattened and then carved, carved with intricate patterns using steel tools, and coloured in detail and smoothly, and equipped with handles made of buffalo horn or wood so that they can be moved.
Before your lunch hour, head to the Beringharjo traditional market, which is located in the city centre. This market sells a variety of vegetables, fruit, typical Yogya food, and various traditional batik clothing motifs. Spend about 1 hour exploring the market.
After visiting the market, if you'd like to have lunch, please inform your driver before continuing to your next destination. This will give you the opportunity to have lunch first. You can also ask your guide for recommended dishes if you'd like to try delicious food in the city. Your guide will help you find the best places to eat in the city.
After lunch, continue to Malioboro Street, a renowned street in Indonesia, and one of Yogyakarta's icons. Explore this area for 30 to 45 minutes. In the Malioboro area, you can also see or listen to traditional music made from bamboo which is called calung music. Usually, several young people sing traditional songs along Malioboro Street. After visiting Malioboro, your city tour trip is over, and your driver will take you back to your hotel.
