Step into the storey of Vukovar through the life and memories of Sophia Eltz, the last countess who lived in Eltz Manor and one of the most remarkable figures in the city’s history.
This walking tour follows the historical development of Vukovar while revealing the personal stories, traditions, and everyday life that shaped the city through the centuries. Starting near the confluence of the Vuka and Danube rivers, you will discover how Vukovar grew from a small riverside settlement into an important cultural and trading centre on the Danube.
As we walk through the city, you will learn about the noble Eltz family and their lasting influence on Vukovar’s development. Through the storey of Sophia Eltz, history becomes personal — from her daily life in the manor to her walks through the town, her faith, and her connection with local people and places.
Along the Danube promenade, we step into the present and explore everyday life in Vukovar today. What is it like to live beside Europe’s second-longest river? How do locals spend their free time? And why does every summer conversation eventually turn to mosquitoes? Discover local traditions, festivals, gastronomy, and the rhythm of modern life in Vukovar.
The journey continues through the Baroque heart of the city, ending at the Franciscan church and monastery, where the storey comes full circle. Here you will hear about the important role of the Franciscans in education, culture, and community life, as well as their close connection with the Eltz family and Sophia herself.

This is not a tour of dates and facts. It is a journey through the people, places, and stories that give Vukovar its soul.
