What you can expect

  • Journey into the Somme, where the scale, intensity, and human cost of the First World War become strikingly tangible. The 1916 offensive remains one of the most devastating battles in modern history—shaping both the war’s outcome and national identities.

At Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial, step onto one of Europe’s best-preserved battlefields. Original trenches and shell craters reveal the fate of the Newfoundland Regiment on 1 July 1916—of over 800 men, fewer than 70 answered roll call the next day.

At Thiepval Memorial, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, stand beneath towering arches commemorating more than 72,000 soldiers with no known grave.

As we drive through the former battlefield, learn about Canada’s role in the Somme at Courcelette, and the emergence of a national identity forged through sacrifice.

Time permitting, see the Tank Memorial at Pozières, and discover the first use of tanks—an innovation born from the brutal realities of trench warfare.

Together, these sites form a moving journey through the Somme—where peaceful fields belie a past marked by courage and loss.

Head to Vimy Ridge for a Poppy Picnic or stop enroute for lunch.

Visit the trenches and tunnels, then explore the Canadian National Vimy Memorial—its symbolism, significance, and commanding view over the battlefield. Connect with individual stories at Canadian Cemetery No. 2.

Visit Notre-Dame-de-Lorette and the Ring of Remembrance honouring 580,000 soldiers of all nationalities. End your day with a final stop at where Canada’s Unknown Soldier was first buried at Cabaret Rouge.

Pickup and return at Arras train station.

Throughout the experience, your guide brings the landscape to life through clear, engaging storytelling, connecting places, people, and events in a meaningful way.
