Sangenjaya is a local area slightly removed from central Tokyo, loved by residents for its relaxed and authentic atmosphere.
For this reason, the tour begins with a meet-up in Shibuya, from where we will travel together by train to Sangenjaya, offering a glimpse into everyday Tokyo life along the way.
We kick off the night at a cosy local eatery that has been serving the community since the 1960s. The lantern-lit alley where it’s located still retains the nostalgic charm of old Tokyo. Here, you’ll enjoy freshly grilled, juicy yakitori paired with a drink of your choice—beer, highball, or a non-alcoholic option. This experience is about more than just food; it’s about the atmosphere, casual conversations, and feeling like part of the local scene.
Next, we stop by the famous Gorilla Building, a quirky and memorable landmark featuring a giant gorilla climbing up its facade. Located in the heart of Sangenjaya, it’s a popular photo spot and a symbol of the area’s unique blend of retro charm and playful creativity.
If time allows, we will visit Taishido Hachiman Shrine, a small but cherished local shrine in central Sangenjaya. Originally established in the 17th century to protect the area and its people, the shrine offers a calm and spiritual escape from the surrounding city. Surrounded by trees and stone lanterns, it’s a place where locals stop to pray for good fortune or enjoy a quiet moment.
For the main dinner, we head to a lively restaurant along Chazawa Street, one of Sangenjaya’s main roads known for its local food scene. Enjoy an all-you-can-drink plan featuring beer, highballs, and sake, along with classic Japanese dishes such as tempura, ham katsu, sushi, grilled fish, sashimi, and edamame.
Next, we visit Carrot Tower, one of Tokyo’s best-kept night-view secrets. From the free observation deck on the top floor, take in a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the city lights, stretching from Shibuya towards Tokyo Tower—and on clear nights, even Mount Fuji.
We end the tour in the “Sankaku Chitai” (Triangle District), a maze of narrow alleys filled with tiny bars, neon lights, and retro charm. With its underground, laid-back vibe, this area is a beloved local nightlife spot. Enjoy a final drink at a cosy bar as you reflect on the night’s experiences.
