The Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival is one of Tokyo’s most iconic summer events, with roots dating back to 1733. Originally held to honour victims of famine and plague, the fireworks were part of a ritual to mourn the dead and uplift the spirits of Edo’s citizens.Revived in 1978, the modern festival now takes place every late July, featuring over 20,000 fireworks across two main display areas. Drawing more than a million spectators, it’s one of Japan’s Three Great Fireworks Festivals—and for many, the most romantic night of Tokyo’s summer.
This year marks the 48th edition of the modern Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival.
