This calligraphy workshop offers a step-by-step journey into Japanese culture, combining learning, creativity, and hands-on experience.
The workshop begins with a fun, quiz-style introduction to the history and origins of kanji, helping participants understand how these characters were created and how they came to carry meaning. This interactive start builds curiosity and sets the stage for the experience that follows.
Next, you’ll move on to an authentic calligraphy session, beginning with grinding solid ink on a traditional inkstone. You can choose from several inkstones actually used by professional calligraphers, allowing you to experience the tools and techniques of real Japanese calligraphy. The slow, mindful process of preparing ink creates a calm and focused atmosphere unlike everyday activities.
During the workshop, you’ll also have the opportunity to change into traditional Japanese-style clothing inspired by kimono, enhancing the sense of immersion and making the experience even more memorable. This moment also offers a great opportunity for photos in a truly Japanese setting.
After that, the instructor will guide you through basic brush techniques, starting with simple kanji characters. This practice session is designed to be easy and approachable, so even complete beginners can feel comfortable and confident.
Once you’re familiar with the basics, you’ll work together with the instructor to select a kanji that represents your name or personal meaning. Each kanji carries its own symbolism, and you’ll choose your character while considering its meaning as well as its visual balance.
Finally, you’ll complete your own calligraphy artwork by carefully writing your chosen kanji.
The finished piece is yours to take home, making it a unique and personal souvenir from your time in Japan.
