Check in for your Okohua Cave Tour adventure at our beautiful headquarters, nestled on the picturesque Tumu Tumu Station.
Here, you’ll meet your expert guide who will fit you with top-of-the-line caving equipment and get you fully prepared for your journey underground.
Your adventure begins with a short walk across striking limestone farmland, often weaving through paddocks dotted with sheep. Soon, you’ll arrive at the hidden entrance to a glowworm-lit wonderland.
Descend into the cave and follow an ancient underground river, winding through sculpted passageways formed over millennia. Along the way, float on tubes beneath a canopy of thousands of shimmering glowworms—a truly magical sight.
Walk and wade through blue pools of spring water as you explore caverns filled with breathtaking formations and unique features found only in Ōkohua Cave. When water levels are just right, experience the thrill of a natural rock slide carved by time.
Emerge from the cave into stunning native bush and enjoy a peaceful bush walk back to the base. There, your adventure ends with a well-earned soak in a cedar hot tub, overlooking the tranquil beauty of the native forest and rolling farmland—an unforgettable way to reflect and relax after your underground adventure.
The Waitomo Experience is a family-owned and operated adventure, set on the stunning Tumu Tumu Station. With a strong commitment to the long-term sustainability of the cave environment, we limit each tour to a maximum of six people. This ensures a more intimate, personalised, and enjoyable experience for every visitor.
Our farm is proudly carbon positive, meaning it sequesters more carbon than it emits—an important part of our dedication to protecting the land for future generations to enjoy.
The base building is located a short distance (10 min drive) outside the Waitomo village. This is where you check in pre and post tour.
