Begin your experience by visiting the Lamphun Night Market, a place that captures the essence of slow life and traditional culture. Unlike bustling tourist markets, this market is a true reflection of local life. As you stroll through, imagine holding a snack in your hand, surrounded by the glow of thousands of lanterns against the deep blue night sky. The cool breeze from the Kuang River adds a refreshing touch to your walk, making it a peaceful and invigorating experience.
Next, join the Lantern Festival, part of the Yi Peng or Lanna-style Loy Krathong, held in Lamphun to honour the Buddha and pay homage to Queen Chamadevi, the city's first ruler. This tradition reflects the Lanna belief that crafting and hanging lanterns is a way to worship the Buddha in heaven. The lanterns' light symbolises prosperity, peace, and guidance to a better life. Participants often write their names and wishes on the lanterns before hanging them in temples and public areas, hoping the light will carry their desires to the heavens.
The beauty of the festival extends beyond the temple grounds, as the entire city of Lamphun is adorned with colourful lanterns, creating a tunnel of light that illuminates the night. This warm and faith-filled atmosphere fosters a sense of unity and community spirit among locals and visitors alike. Each year, a grand lantern parade takes place, with people from various communities bringing intricately decorated lanterns to march through the streets to Wat Phra That Hariphunchai, offering them as a tribute to the Buddha and a testament to their shared faith.
