I saw Melrose Abbey a few years ago, and wanted to bring my grandsons to see it as well. I wasn't expecting them to love it, but that they did! They loved climbing upon the ruins, and reading many of the gravestones in the cemetery from the middle ages. The best part of the day was at Alnwick Castle, which could easily be a full day trip on its own, especially if you have children of any age, though every adult I spoke to loved it there. Some of the castle was used for filming the Harry Potter movies, and if you are a fan, you'll see it instantly inside the castle walls. The castle is in terrific shape, and it was a booklover's dream of a library. The garden was defnitely our favorite part. Don't miss the bamboo maze, if you saw the Triwizard tournament! The Poison Garden is worth the wait, and turned out to be one of our favorite parts of the day. There is food in the Tree House and patio, too. There is a tremendous amount of walking, so be prepared!
