What you can expect

Today, Westerland is the vibrant centre of Sylt, but behind its shopping streets and beach promenade lies a turbulent past. On this guided walking tour, you will discover Old Westerland together with a Sylt native and embark on an exciting journey through time.

The tour starts at the Old Village Church of St. Niels, the historic heart of the town. From here, the tour takes you past lovingly preserved Frisian houses and along streets that tell the storey of the challenges faced in centuries gone by. Learn how storm surges threatened the village and how the residents once made a living from fishing and whaling under modest conditions.

Through the storey of a large Sylt family, the development of Westerland comes to life – from a vulnerable island village to the seaside resort of national importance it is today. Personal anecdotes, historical context, and local insights make this guided tour an authentic encounter with the island's history.

After about 90 minutes, the tour concludes with a new perspective on Westerland and its past.
