Overview

  • This is not just a sightseeing tour—it’s a fully immersive journey into the world of Higurashi When They Cry, set in the real-life village that inspired it. Walk through Shirakawa-go with a guide who connects each location to the storey, revealing how the village’s geography, history, and deep-rooted community traditions shaped the unsettling yet captivating atmosphere of the series.

Rather than simply visiting photo spots, you’ll explore the meaning behind them—from the role of shrines and ancestral beliefs to the close-knit social structure that mirrors the tension and harmony depicted in the anime. As you move through the village, the line between fiction and reality gradually fades, offering a deeper understanding of both the storey and the culture that inspired it.

Designed for true fans, this tour lets you experience Higurashi not just as an anime, but as a living world grounded in real history and human connections.

Activity itinerary

Shirakawago

  • 50m
Shirakawa-go is a UNESCO World Heritage village known for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, built with steep thatched roofs designed to withstand heavy snowfall. Surrounded by mountains and shaped by isolation, the village preserved a strong sense of community, reflected in the cooperative system known as “Yui.” This unique social structure and remote setting deeply influenced the atmosphere of Higurashi When They Cry, where the balance between harmony and tension within a close-knit village plays a central role.

Shirakawa Hachiman Shrine

  • 20m
Shirakawa Hachiman Shrine is one of the most important spiritual sites in the village and serves as the model for the Furude Shrine in Higurashi When They Cry. Dedicated to Hachiman, a deity historically associated with emperors and protection, the shrine also reflects Japan’s deep-rooted traditions of nature and ancestral worship. In the context of the series, it evokes the presence of unseen forces and the idea that a village’s past and its people are closely tied to its spiritual beliefs.

和田家住宅

  • 40m
  • Admission ticket included
The Wada House is the largest and best-preserved gassho-zukuri farmhouse in Shirakawa-go, once home to a prominent local family. Its spacious interior and multi-level structure offer insight into traditional rural life, as well as the social hierarchy within the village. In Higurashi When They Cry, it serves as the model for the Sonozaki residence, a place associated with authority, secrecy, and the darker aspects of village traditions, making it one of the most iconic locations for fans.

Ogimachi Castle Old Site Observatory

  • 40m
The Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observatory offers a panoramic view of Shirakawa-go, allowing visitors to see the entire village from above. This perspective highlights the isolated geography and tightly connected layout that define the setting of Higurashi When They Cry. Featured in key scenes, the viewpoint symbolises both calm observation and underlying unease, capturing the contrast between the village’s peaceful appearance and the complex emotions and stories hidden within it.
