Overview

Located about two kilometres from the capital Argostoli, on the coastal road to Lassi, are the island’s most well known sinkholes, known in Greek as katavothres. Seawater enters the sinkholes on the coast and re-emerges at Melissani Lake and Karavomilo on the other side of the island. The existence of a karstic network across the island was proven in a 1963 experiment, in which Austrian geologists dumped green dye into the sinkholes of Katavothres and traced the course of the disappearing water with the use of radioisotopes.
The watermills were erected by the Englishman Stevens, who was the first to observe this fascinating geological phenomenon. The diagram below illustrates the course of the water:

  1. Seawater enters the sinkholes near Argostoli.

  2. The water passes beneath the harbour and mountains of the island.

  3. Rainwater is added to the seawater.

  4. The seawater and rainwater mix together.

  5. The brackish waters re-emerge at Melissani Lake and Karavomilo at Sami.

Activity itinerary

Sinkholes of Argostoli (Pass by)
The sinks of Argostoli have been considered another "mystery" by many of Kefalonia. At the edge of the Argostoli Peninsula the sea penetrates the land and flows into sinkholes. The phenomenon has long troubled scientists. In 1963, geologists Viktor Maurin and Josef Zötl of the University of Graz threw 160 kilogrammes of paint into one of the sinks. Two weeks later traces of colour were found in springs on the other side of the island, 14 km away, as well as in the Melissani lake cave. The sinks are nothing more than karstic gaps through which the waters of the rivers that flow into the polga are drained. The strange thing is that the sinks of Argostoli are a system of crevices that are located at a lower level than the sea surface and constantly receive its waters with momentum, a kind of coastal abyss with a constant inflow of sea water. Many scientists claim that fresh water descends underground from Ainos, it is estimated that 1,000 cubic metres per 24 hours are lost.

Short tour by rowing boat Melissani lake is a wonderful underground lake with sublime stalactites, where some kind of worship of God Pan took place in historical times. When illuminated by the sun’s rays, sublime colours are reflected on the lake water.
Drogarati Cave
  • 40m
  • Admission ticket not included
The Drogarati Cave in Kefalonia was discovered 300 years ago and opened to the public in 1963. It was discovered when a strong earthquake caused a collapse that revealed the cave's entrance. Drogarati is an impressive cave with remarkable formations of stalactites and stalagmites. Speleologists say that this cave is about 150 million years old and constitutes a rare geological phenomenon. The cave is about 60m deep and has a constant temperature of 18ΊC. The humidity of the cave reaches 90%. Although it has undergone many damages because of earthquakes, stalactites still hang from the roof and form amazing shapes. As water drops fall onto these shapes and solidify, they give them another shape, long but gradually along centuries. Drogarati Cave consists of two parts. The part accessible to tourists consists of a long corridor that leads to the Royal Balcony, a natural platform of stalactites that beautifully reflect the light.
