Activity itinerary

Flagstaff

Begin your Sedona adventure just south of Flagstaff at I-17 Exit 337, following the signs for AZ-89A South towards Sedona. From here, the drive gradually leaves the Flagstaff area behind and heads through vast ponderosa pine forests towards the dramatic landscapes of Oak Creek Canyon.

Oak Creek Vista Overlook

Enjoy panoramic views across Oak Creek Canyon before beginning the descent towards Sedona. This is an excellent first stop for photos and a chance to appreciate the scale of the canyon from above. A small Native American crafts market may also be available here.

West Fork Oak Creek Trail

One of the most scenic hiking areas in Oak Creek Canyon, West Fork follows the creek beneath towering canyon walls and through a lush, tree-lined landscape. The full outing is about 6.5 miles return, but you can simply walk a shorter section and turn back whenever you like. Expect several creek crossings along the way.

Slide Rock State Park

One of Oak Creek Canyon's most popular stops, Slide Rock is known for its natural sandstone water slide and swimming area. You can also explore the historic Pendley Homestead, old apple orchard, original buildings, and several short hiking trails.

Oak Creek Visitor Center

This historic area marks the site of Sedona's first Anglo settlement, established by John James Thompson in 1876. Today you can find a historic general store as well as the Oak Creek Visitor Centre, with maps, hiking information, bathrooms, souvenirs, and Red Rock Pass information.

Grasshopper Point Picnic Area

A favourite local swimming and picnic spot along Oak Creek, Grasshopper Point offers a quieter alternative to Slide Rock. Visitors can wade in the creek, relax beside the water, or watch adventurous swimmers cliff jump into the pools below.

Midgley Bridge

This graceful single-span bridge provides one of the most photogenic stops along Oak Creek Canyon. A short walk from the Huckaby Trailhead leads to an overlook with a great angle of the bridge, while a longer hike descends towards Oak Creek.

Sedona Arts Center

Stop by one of Sedona's long-standing centers for local art. The complex includes galleries, workshops, and classrooms where you can browse ceramics, paintings, sculptures, and other works while experiencing Sedona's creative side.

Uptown Sedona

Uptown is the best part of Sedona to explore on foot, with restaurants, cafés, galleries, souvenir shops, and beautiful views of the surrounding red rocks. Take some time to stroll the high streets, grab a bite to eat, or browse the local stores and galleries.

Sedona Heritage Museum

Discover the stories of Sedona's early homesteaders and ranchers inside the historic Jordan Family Homestead. Exhibits include a stagecoach, an old apple packing shed, local winemaking history, and a historic railway depot once used during the filming of Angel and the Badman.

Airport Mesa

Fantastic views across Sedona and the surrounding landscape await you here. A 3.5-mile hike circles the mesa and provides full 360-degree views, but you don't need to complete the whole trail to enjoy the scenery.

Amitabha Stupa & Peace Park

Set beneath Thunder Mountain, this peaceful Tibetan Buddhist site offers a quiet place for reflection among juniper trees and colourful prayer flags. The park includes the 36-foot Amitabha Stupa, the smaller White Tara Stupa, a Buddha statue, and a Native American medicine wheel.

Devil's Bridge

Devil's Bridge is Sedona's largest sandstone arch and one of its most photographed natural landmarks. The roughly 4-mile return hike includes some scrambling and allows adventurous visitors to walk onto the top of the dramatic rock arch.

Boynton Canyon Trail

This trailhead provides access to one of Sedona's most popular canyon areas. From here, you can choose anything from a short walk to the vortex and Kachina Woman formation to a much longer exploration deep into Boynton Canyon.

Red Rock Loop Road

Enjoy a scenic 7-mile drive through some of West Sedona's classic red-rock scenery. The route passes Red Rock State Park, Crescent Moon, several hiking areas, and excellent viewpoints of Cathedral Rock.

Crescent Moon Picnic Site

This is one of the classic places to photograph Cathedral Rock, especially when its red spires are reflected in the waters of Oak Creek. The area is also popular for picnicking, swimming, fishing, and relaxing beside the creek.

Secret Slickrock Trail

This short and relatively easy trail leads to excellent views of Cathedral Rock without requiring a long hike. At less than half a mile each way, it is a great option for travellers looking for impressive scenery with a smaller time commitment.

Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village

Explore a beautiful Mexican-inspired village filled with courtyards, fountains, archways, galleries, jewellery shops, restaurants, and a small chapel. Its distinctive architecture and shaded walkways make it a relaxing place to browse, eat, and experience Sedona's artistic character.

Schnebly Hill Road

The first paved mile of Schnebly Hill Road offers a taste of one of Sedona's famous backcountry routes. At the end of the paved section, you can park near the Munds Wagon Trailhead, where even a short walk leads to panoramic red-rock views.

Chapel of the Holy Cross

Built directly into Sedona's red sandstone formations, the Chapel of the Holy Cross is one of the city's most recognisable landmarks. Its striking modern design and dramatic setting make it worthwhile whether you visit the chapel itself or simply admire the structure and surrounding scenery.

Cathedral Rock Trailhead

Get an up-close look at one of Sedona's most famous formations. The approximately one-mile out-and-back hike climbs towards the base of Cathedral Rock, gaining more than 500 feet and providing spectacular views back across Sedona. Cathedral Rock is also the site of one of Sedona's four major vortexes.

Bell Rock Boulevard & Courthouse Butte Road (Pass by)

Two of Sedona's most recognisable formations rise side by side here. You can take an easy one-mile return hike towards the base of Bell Rock or choose the longer 4-mile loop around Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte.

Village of Oak Creek

As you travel through the village, enjoy excellent views of Courthouse Butte and Bell Rock rising ahead of you. Oak Creek Village also offers restaurants, shops, golf courses, and convenient places to stop for food or fuel before continuing south.

Red Rock Ranger Station

A useful final stop for learning more about Sedona's landscape and the surrounding national forest. Inside you'll find exhibits on local geology and ecosystems, an introductory film, a native plant and hummingbird garden, maps, souvenirs, and information about exploring the Red Rock area.
