Begin your tour in beautiful Forsyth Park to meet your guide and start exploring. Take in the sights of this 30-acre park in the historic district, and learn more about the iconic tree of the Deep South, the live oak festooned with Spanish moss.
Next, let's check out the traffic-stopping Armstrong-Kessler Mansion across Gaston Street. After learning of its illustrious history and taking multiple photos of the palatial home, we will walk to one of Savannah's crown jewels, Monterey Square. Here, take in stately mansions like the Hardee House, and learn about Savannah's connection to Revolutionary hero Casimir Pulaski at his monument.
Also at Monterey Square, see the infamous Mercer-Williams House and learn about a local true-crime mystery that changed our City's history. Across the way, discover the surprising storey of a house of worship with a very unusual design.
Next, we'll continue to one of the prettiest sights in Savannah: Jones Street. Here, we will learn about the unique building materials used throughout the Historic District, how it was made, and what became of our plantations, now gone. All along, we will of course have numerous photo ops as we marvel at the picturesque sights around us.
Next, let's head to Madison Square with its important civic buildings, monument, and interesting modern vibe. Here, we'll have a chance to grab a refreshment at one of Savannah's quaint cafés in one of our most monumental buildings, the Scottish Rite Temple. Admire the stately presence of the old Savannah Volunteer Guards Armoury and learn of its importance to the history of our world-renown art school, the Savannah College of Art & Design.
Next, we'll make our way to Lafayette Square to learn of Girl Scout history, and to stand in awe of a beautiful “electrifying” mansion. Also, marvel at the stunning Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist, and learn of its key early role in our Irish heritage and celebrations.
If time allows, we'll also go find the “Jingle Bells church” on our smallest, quaintest square, and learn about the Oglethorpe Plan–considered a model of urban design in classrooms around the world today.
